Salt water swimming pools

Sunset21, 20 February, 2009 at 07:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

My mum hates them, she puts me off whenever I mention going on a hol where the hotel has them. What's wrong with salt water swimming pools? I can't remember her reasoning for her hatred of them, being too cold maybe?

To be honest, I prefer salt water ones. There is still chlorine in them but just not the same amount that causes the smell, the green hair and the irritation to skin. I think some people tend to believe that when you say a salt water swimming pool, they've just got a load of sea water and dumped it in the pool, so it'll be really really salty and hurt your eyes. We had a salt water one in our villa last year and the kids had their heads under all the time without irritation and their skin didn't dry out at all.

Not sure about the temperature thing but I can't see it being colder for any reason, ours certainly wasn't.

Hmm, i'll have to ask her why she doesn't like them. I don't tend to put my head under and MissSun wears goggles so I can't see it making a difference. Just looking at a hol in the Algarve and it has two of them.

I wouldn't let it put you off. Its gentler on the eyes/skin/hair anyway, so even if MissSun doesn't wear goggles, she should be ok. My two youngest (3 and 5) seem to like the actual thought of wearing goggles and putting them on, but they're never on right or tight enough so they end up full of water anyway ? The other bonus is there isn't that nasty smell of chlorine following you everywhere which still reminds me of the municipal victorian baths we used to visit for school swimming lessons <shudder>

I also hate swimming in the sea.

I much prefer salt water to chlorinated water, it feels much less chemical and harsh. Also i find it easier to swim in them and the sea due to the salt helping with buoyancy. Don't let the salt water in the pools put you off a fab holiday in the Algarve ?

To be honest I'm not keen on salt water because it stings my eyes.

One of the water parks in Tenerife is salt water and it wasnt very pleasant going down the shoots and landing in salt water. It also did funny things to my bits ?

I too avoid swimming in the sea though.
