I think its typical to send them 9 months-1 year in advance. It will also depend if your wedding is on a weekday or abroad as well as people might need more notice to get time off work.

We're hoping to finalise our wedding plans this week for June 2012 and then send out save the dates between July and September.

I have sent mine already to my family members who are on the definite definite list, but not sent them to the friends that I dont see very often. Its sounds awful but we have limited spaces due to funds so dont want to invite those we might drift apart from over the next year iykwim.

I sent our out over the weekend and we're getting married in April. Our wedding is on Easter Bank Holiday weekend though so didn't want people to get all booked up :-)

Sending some of mine out next week and some out a couple of weeks later. Get married on a Friday, so want to give people plenty of notice.

I sent mine in Peoples Christmas Cards last year. Because our day is a Thursday and at the end of the year, we wanted to make sure that everyone could get the time off their work and keep holidays if nescessary. Feels like we did that just yesterday, not 6 months ago! eek!!

We sent ours last week for August 2012, but we have a lot of friends who are teachers or have children so we didn't want them booking their holidays for then, plus it's during the Olypmics so we wanted to give lots of notice.
