I sent mine out with 9 months notice and will be sending out the rest later on:

January - Save the Dates (for day guests)
June/July - Invites (and/or inserts) (for day and evening guests)
Late August - Chase up RSPVs
    20th September - Wedding!

You don't wanna do it too far in advance because people will just forget. You need to think how you are going to do them too. Mine were magnetic so stuck to the fridge as a constant reminder Smiley tongue You could have keyrings, bookmarks or simple cards Smiley smile I'd say 9-12 months is a good time frame xXx

I am a July 2014 bride, and am planning to get mine out a year before. I am currently sticking tiny bunting flags on individually for 60 cards, so they will go out when they are done! ha

Usually 12 months before for save the dates and then you also dont have as much panic about invitations as well

I think you need to base it on your wedding and your guests. For example if you're getting married during the week or if people will need to travel you may need to give people more notice so they can plan their leave. Also if your wedding is in school holidays and you've got a lot of guests with kids then the earlier the better as people are likely to book holidays then.

I'm getting married 31st July 2014 and have just finished making my (very cheap and rubbish!) save the dates and I will be sending them out in May. This is because I am only having 30 people at my wedding ceremony so can't really lose numbers, and it's also a Thursday so guests will need to take the day off work. The majority of them work so I just felt if I want them there this much then it's only fair I give them loads of notice so they don't book holidays abroad or anything silly!

I'm getting married mid July and one of the options at the minute is to send the save the dates out with christmas cards, so around 7 months before the wedding. If we don't do that I expect they will go out at a similar time, no later than that anyway. We have quite a few guests who would be travelling so want to give them plenty of time to sort hotels etc.

I'm getting married in May next year, My Save the Date cards arrived this week and will be going out once I've written the envelopes. I just want them sent and out of the way now. We're getting married on a bank holiday weekend and my family are all travelling from Scotland so will need to make arrangements fairly soon. There are also a lot of our guests who work in retail and will struggle to get days off booked if I don't get them out fast.

I sent mine out a year before the wedding as its on a friday in school holidays, so it gives people a warning not to book anything!

This has made me feel better - we are getting married in a year and I'm just finishing the save the date cards so they'll be going out soon. Thought maybe I was getting a bit ahead of myself but at least half the wedding party will be travelling so I thought better safe than sorry! Mind you, the MIL did think it was much too soon for invites and didn't get the idea of save the dates at all ?

I don't get married until Oct 2014 and mine are sitting on the shelf. They were the first thing we bought (before even paying the deposit). After waiting 7 and a half years for it to happen, I will be enjoying everyone minute so will be going out to immediate family soon then other day guests around a year before if I can wait that long. Xx

we looked at the Friday and Sunday since it was the holiday weekend but so many of my family are travelling from Scotland they are having to take the Friday off to travel anyway. At least I get to spend some time with them on the Sunday before they have to go home ?

Completely agree! Feel like once we send them out it'll be really real, I wouldn't want to wait until the proper invitations to tell everyone. And I've had so much fun making them as well.
