Save the date cards

hannahleigh2025, 12 February, 2015 at 17:37 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi there folks. I have today booked my wedding for the 17th June 2017, when do you think it would be appropriate for me to send out save the date cards?

Many thanks

We are getting married in August 2016 and will be looking to send them out in March / April time this year. As our wedding is on a Monday in the middle of summer we want to make sure pepole know the date so that (if they do want to come!) they don't book holidays and are aware that they may have to take a day off work!

I think I got a bit too overexcited and sent mine out last October for July next year! I have people travelling from abroad though, but I understand it's more like 12 months in advance typically.

Normally 12 months is fine, but if there's something specific which means you might need to tell people sooner then I guess 18 months is OK. This could be if you're getting married at a peak time and accommodation will be at a premium, or if people will need to save up.

Just to take this a little further, two or more years seems OTT to me and people will get confused and while you might get initial excitement, some people will think OMG are we going to have to live this wedding for 2 1/2 years! It's only right that we are all excited and giddy about our own weddings, but other people have their own lives and if you try to do too much too soon (and I'm not suggesting you are) you will face apathy towards your wedding which you could find upsetting. People become much more engaged the nearer it gets.

Any more than 12 months in advance is too far out.

We're getting married in May 2016 and hoping to send them out this month or next, but ours is a bank holiday weekend and I've got a lot of family who live abroad, so wanted to give them a bit of extra notice.
