Save the date cards - etiquette?

afs8, 9 August, 2009 at 15:14 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi ladies

Just wondered if any of you could help me? I want to send save the date cards out for my wedding next July. Is it ok (or bad manners?) to send the same card to everyone including those that are coming for the whole day (ceremony, meal and evening) and those that are just coming for the evening reception?

I don't want people who end up only being invited to the evening reception to be dissapointed if they were under the impression that they were coming for the whole day. As the wedding is on a firday they might even book annual leave unnecessarily! The thing is though that at this stage I am not completely clear who we will be inviting to which part!

What do you think?

Andrea xx

No, I would say it's fine to send to all.

Budget-wise, you'd save money only sending them to the day guests, but I personally would send to all Smiley smile

    Hi Andrea, it depends...

If you know some of the evening guests may be expecting to be there for the whole 'do' then you should clarify. are you printing them yourself? then it would be easy to modify. otherwise maybe there is a way of incorporating 'evening invite' or something like that on there..?

I'm only considering having a handful of evening guests or non at all - I'm just going to send my STDs to those who I am definitely going to invite to the day time.

I kind of agree with amethyst on this one... What does your STD say on it?

I haven't bought them yet so I can still be flexible about what they say. Maybe I could print them myself and modify them accordingly? The bought ones all seem to say the same (save the date).

I am looking at around 75 for the main event and another 50 (total 125) for the evening. In an ideal world I would have had everyone for the whole day but we have a budget (you know what it's like...!)..

I've had a STD for an evening do before - it didn't specify it was an evening do STD. As it was more of a friend of a friend I assumed it would be an evening invite though! You do the risk of people assuming they have been invited to the daytime do though & like you say booking time off work!

Been thinking about this too - do you think it's bad to say Save the Day and Save the Evening instead of Save the Date?? Would clear up any confusion ;-)

Save the dates are really only meant for your closest guests who you really want to notify in advance for their diary planning. I would recommend only sending to your day guests and for example we didn't even send to all of them as we weren't entirely sure of numbers a year in advance.

Def ensure it's clear if you do send them to evening guests as well that it's an evening only invite as certainly you wouldn't want them to book the Friday off work unnecessarily!

Would any of you girls seriously book a day off work a year in advance based on a save the date? I wouldn't! I'd wait for the actual invitation, which will arrive in plenty of time for booking time off work if needed and will clarify whether it's evening or full day. Worrying about nothing IMO.

We didn't send Save the Dates to our evening guests. I've always thought that they were more for daytime guests really. I'd hate to have someone feel left out if they had assumed from a Save the Date that they were invited to the whole day when really it's just the evening portion!

I agree with the majority. Send your STD's to the day guests and then send your invites out in plenty of times for the evening guests to arrange their eve.
