Save the Dates

gippdeer, 26 May, 2013 at 13:44 Posted on Planning 0 13

Do they need anything but our names and the date on the save the dates?

We know that we will have to tell people the date before the invites because we are getting married in a school holiday.

FMIL (don't think I have ever talked to her this much) has suggested that we put where we are getting married as well. Not the address or anything (we don't know) but like say in Scotland or something.

As it isn't where we live (is where OH is from and where his parents live) and it tells people that they probably need to pencil in 2 days or a weekend for it because of travel.

What do you think?

If people are going to have to make travel/accommodation arrangements, especially if it's a popular tourist area that will require booking far in advance, then yes, I think it's polite to put some location information on there.

Ours give the date, the village and county but not specifics about the venue. However, we're also doing a wedding website and details of that will be going out with the STDs. We did that because like you we're getting married away from where we live, and only 2 families attending live close by.

They usually only have the names and the dates on, although I think if people are going to need to pencil in 2 days off as the wedding isn't in your local area, perhaps best to give a bit more information. Smiley smile

I would give the details as much as possible as if people have to travel they might be unaware if you dont put at least the country lol. This is what I put on the ones I make

    The most important things are:

The date - Guests need to know when

    Where - For travel arrangements

    Who - For obvious reasons

Any other info will be provided on the actual invitations.

Hijacking this post a little but it's a similar question:

For brides who are having a church wedding and reception in different places (for us about 20 minutes away) - what location is best to put on the save the dates? I'm thinking the reception location as it's where people would be staying over if they needed to (we have a lot of people travelling a fair distance)? But then it's not where the actual wedding is... but I suppose they would find that out on the actual invitation wouldn't they? I think I've answered my own question! Just wondering what others were doing

I put a picture of the venue on the card. Guests seemed to like that as it gave them something to imagine Smiley smile

This. Our families live far apart so we just stated on the save the date which county the wedding was in, so that people could book up accommodation if they wished before getting the invite.

Our save-the-dates are probably a bit unusal to a lot of people, but we just felt that if we had the information then why not give it. We also asked for RSVP's because when we send "invites" (even though they will all know they are invited) we will put on the menu choices. This gives people 2 opportunities to reply, so the idea was to minimise RSVP chasing. I think you can do it anyway you like. This is what ours ended up like...

We included our names, date and accommodation details as we are getting married a little way from home and wanted people to be able to get cheaper hotel rooms if they liked.

These are our Save The Dates. This is just the sample, so not our names/dates.

We will give all the same details shown here:

I also just received these in the post - custom stamps, with a photo of our venue on each one. I am also going to use these when sending out both the Save the Dates and the invites. Our Invites will match the Save The Dates:

I also bought a stamp of our venue, sketched by Holly's Houses - I'm not sure if this is a bit overkill to also use on the Save The Dates - I'm going to wait to see how large the envelopes are. But a sketch of the venue might be stamped on the back - if not, I will use it on the main invite envelopes - http://www.hollyshouses.co.uk/weddingstamps.html

We are having a 'card style' so the front is our names and the date, and inside gives the venue details and the website where they can book accommodation. This is as we are getting married somewhere away from where we live.

I generally put the names, wedding date and a 'formal invitation to follow' on each of mine.

However, I guess you could put down the venue name.

I think as long as you've given the guest plenty of time in knowing the date that should be fine. I would add more specific details into the invites and send them out around 6 months before hand, giving them plenty of time to book two days off if needed be and to find travel arrangements.

Ours were postcards with name, Save the date, date and venue on the front (we just used a generic design from wedding chicks for this). On the back the left hand side has the address of the closest two hotels and a note about the day. The right was left blank so we could write the addresses on.
