It varies from wedding to wedding. For destination weddings and weddings that fall on a public holiday, Save the Dates should be sent out ASAP to ensure everyone has enough notice, enough time to arrange travel/accommodation etc. Also if you're planning your wedding within a short time frame (within a year) you should send them out as soon as you've set your date.

We're getting married in July and sent ours out in September, we're planning to send out the formal invites in Feb.

I'm getting married in Oct next year, and I sent my save the dates in February ... I was too excited to wait any longer!
I have family dotted about all over the place and wanted to make sure everyone had enough warning
It's entirely up to you Smiley smile

We sent ours seven months before (got married feb 14, sent save the dates july 13) because a lot of our friends take snowboarding holidays and jan/feb is prime time for that. seven months worked well and all the snowboarders/ski enthusiasts were in attendance Smiley smile

I would get it out asap. Then perhaps do a reminder nearer the time, say 1yr from the day?! Best to lock it down!! Whoop. Congrats x

It's never too early in my opinion to get a date in the diary!

February sounds like a good time.

    Happy planning!

To be honest as a guest I wouldn't really want a Save the Date much more than a year ago unless it was abroad. I don't make plans, even holidays, that far in advance and don't have a diary that goes that far ahead! I think if I was making plans 18 months before I probably won't be changing them for a wedding. Having said that however I guess if lots of people are having weddings etc you want to get in first with the date.

I think about 12 months in advance should be plenty for most. We gave ours out to key guests once we hit the 12 month mark and then have sent the rest out with Christmas cards this year for our wedding, which is September 2015.

Any longer than a yearish and you run the risk of people not really having anything to do with it once they've received it. Few people have diaries or calendars for more than a year ahead for example.

I know how tempting it is to want to get things done and sent out (we booked our venue October 2012, for a Sept 2015 wedding!) butI really would wait a little bit longer ?

I think it depends to me recieving a save the date I don't see much point over a year in advance as previously said no one has calanders etc. We are organising within a year and weren't going to bother with them but a lot of our friends go kayaking in June so we knew we had to book them out before they booked holidays. I think we sent them out end of August/September.

Anything over a year seems a bit far in advance but I say that as a guest. I would forget!

Also a lot of places don't let you book hotels/flights/trains etc more than a year in advance from a guests point of view. We sent ours out to guests so that they could get the best prices on those kind of things which to me is the point of a save the date.

As in Feb 2015? So around a year and a half in advance? I agree with your OH in that is too early IMO.

We are getting hitched in July 2016, so our sending ours out Xmas 2015.

TBH as a guest, if I recieved one that far in advance, I would forget or lose it. The only reason I kept the one we were sent for a wedding a couple years ago is because it was a fridge magnet!!

Unfortunately guests dont have the same mentality as brides when it comes to remembering dates of weddings so ahead of time. Your parents will, but other guests may not. Hell, even my bridesmaids keep forgetting the date because it is off their radar as it is so far away yet!!

As others have said, 18months in advance is too soon, as a guest of several weddings I have often lost the save the date if it isn't either close enough to the date that I can put it in my diary or a fridge magnet!

And have you actually booked things, paid deposits etc that mean the date definitely won't change?
