Save the dates - is it too early?!

Bethmdoyle, 25 May, 2013 at 08:28 Posted on Planning 0 8

Is it too early for save the date cards?

My partner and I were never engaged, we have lived together for 3 years and have a gorgeous little girl. We just sat down one day and decided "lets get married." So it will be a big surprise when people open their save the date cards Smiley smile Everything is booked for July 12th next year. I'm keen to send out our std cards as soon as possible, but worried it might be a bit early? Particularly as have two friends weddings in between and don't want to think I'm stepping on their toes! My other halves family is from Irish and a lot of his friends over here work on the rail (and it is hideous getting time of work!) my friends live all over the country with awkward jobs or lots of kids (and due to venue capacity restrictions we are not inviting our friends children) so just feel letting people know our plans and date ASAP will give everyone the best chance to save, sort babysitters, but flights and get time off work.

What do you think? Too early? And are we likely to annoy our friends announcing our plans now (one getting married in July another in September.)

Personally I wouldn't send them out longer than a year before because although it's a save the date, people might forget.

I sent mine about 11 months before, I'm getting married on a Friday during term time so I wanted to give people plenty of notice and we have guests coming from New Zealand too so they need notice to book flights.

Having said that, it's your wedding so do what makes you happy. There are plenty of people who have sent theirs out earlier than me.

Thanks for your reply. We are off to a wedding in Ireland in July and they didn't send on save the dates but they told everyone they had booked and when it was ages in advance. Also slight concern is as it is in the Irish school holidays don't want people to book their family holidays first and then not be able to come. I suppose the real issue is that no one even knows that we have decided to get married so arent remotely expecting it! My other halfs family in Ireland are his closest family and think he'd be gutted if they couldn't come x

I would at least wait until this July has passed before sending out July invites for next year. I got one for August 2014 2 weeks ago and thought it was a bit odd. What am I meant to do, buy a calendar 2 years in advance to write it on? I will vaguely keep it in mind, but won't start planning for it until actual invites go out. Wait til Aug this year, then send invites early too.

I'd wait until July and post them, people will forget otherwise!

I think its around the year mark. But then we never did any. I'd never even heard of them til a friend did it for hers last year. Seems really popular now though.

I'm getting married on the same day as you ? I'm sending our STD out this July and the invitations are going out in December... I don't know if you are aware but the the 12th is also the day before the last day of the 2014 fifa world cup and its also the 20th year of the fifa world cup so it goes without saying that football matches will be being played on our big days... Just in case you have any footie mad family or friends.

Yes sadly aware of the World Cup being on Smiley sad my partner actually nearly said we had to rearrange the wedding...was less than impressed!!! Though luckily the final is on the next day, so we are having a big BBQ and putting up a projector to play the football on the Sunday as an after party. I would personally be furious if anyone put football over our big day, I know men take their football seriously but your loved ones wedding should come first. My other half said he once went to a wedding when there was the World Cup on and men were watching it during the ceremony!! I would be so so angry!!! Stupid football lol xxx
