Saying Goodbye to the Dress...

Gillsy, 28 August, 2010 at 22:36 Posted on Planning 0 15

Well, this evening it was finally time to fold up and box my wedding dress. After the Rock the Frock last Sunday I see no other reason to wear my dress so it was finally time to remove it from the spare bed and put it into its box.

OMs - where are your dresses at the mo and how sad do you feel about never being able to come up with an excuse to wear it again??? lol

Anyways, thought I'd give it a proper send-off and post a little pic of its final resting place.....

I don't think I'll be able to just shut my dress away in a box, I'll feel bad. Wonder if I could get it put in a huge box frame lol

Mine is literally stuffed in a brown box in the loft. Did you get your dress cleaned and where did you get the box from?

I got it cleaned after the wedding but not after the RTF - it didn't get too dirty, just a little bit at the bottom but not enough to justify getting it cleaned again. I bought the box online from J Waterman Boxmakers Ltd.

Thanks I'll get them out. Doubt I'll bother cleaning mine because the cost is outrageous when I'll never have it on again.

Mine went in a cardboard box wrapped in tissue paper straight after the wedding (no trash the dress, rock the frock etc in those days LOL!) I didn't bother having mine cleaned as I wanted it to be as much as it was on the day as possible so it was packed up along with the veil and headdress covered in confetti. The box went into the loft which is somewhere out of bounds for me because I can't get into the loft even on ladders because I'm only 4ft 11" so there it stayed from 1983 until last year! Last year, we had to clear out the loft because we were having new loft insulation so much to my hubby's annoyance, he had to finally get everything out. Out came stuff we hadn't seen for donkey's years! Our daughter's old toys, old computers, books, all my old LP's and 45's and my dress! We had a very nostalgic weekend! I expected it to be discoloured and possibly moth eaten but to my suprise, it was just as it was when I put it in the box except for a couple of stains from the confetti but to see all the confetti again brought all the memories back. At the bottom of the box was a carrier bag full of stuff and when I opened it, it was all our wedding day cards everyone had sent which I couldn't even remember putting in there. Reading through was quite tearful because some of the people who sent them are no longer with us Smiley sad I couldn't resist trying my dress on - couldn't do the zip all the way up but I am a stone heavier now! I went downstairs to show hubby and did a quick twirl and got an "OMG!" reaction "Can't believe you can still get into that!" Subtle as a brick my husband LOL! Then I turned round and showed him the undone back view ! I re-packed it in a new cardboard box and tissue paper and at the moment, it's on top of the wardrobe because we made a pledge never to put anything in the loft again so we don't have to spend a whole weekend clearing it out when and if we ever move! You could always try it on again on a special anniversary, your first wedding anniversary perhaps - no reason why you can't just for the fun of it!

My dress is still in its bag, hanging from the bedroom curtain pole........ I do fancy doing something with it, I could have it shortened to balerina length for example but not till i lose some weight!!! Hubbys nagging me to box it though.....then it will prolly live under the bed..

cant wait to see you pics, gillsy x

What a lovely story Rainbow Florist!!!!!

Teehee - I think its probably time for you to box up your dress, will be easy enough to get back out of it whenever you want. Alan said 2 weeks for the pics so hopefully any time in the next week I'll get the RTF pics back. Will post on here, Gxx

One of my friends from work got married last April and her dress is still haning in the wardobe of her spare room, she says that when ever she has had a bad day or is feeling blue, she puts it on and prances around in it and it really cheers her up!!

I have no idea what i will do with mine as we are in aone bedroom flat at the moment, will probably have to store it at my mum's!

Mine is at my mil still in its bag, its currently hung up in my h's wardrobe in his old bedroom. It went there in October, when we were doing up our bedroom to save it getting spoilt. Not looked at it since might have an nose later when we go for tea. Will eventually box it and have it home

Mines up in the loft too ( 18 years)

Brought it down last year to show my teenager's daughters - any excuse to try it on again.

They also had a try on but then it was put back in it's box and up to the loft.

I too keep all my cards and things i was given on my wedding day, like Rainbow Florist, it made my sad to see how many people, who are not with us now.

I would love to do it over again possibly with a new dress on a warm beach !! ( same husband)
