Your patient information leaflet should detail that. If you don't have it anymore than you can usually find copies of them on the manufacturer's website. You could also refer to the BNF online. You have to register to use it but it is free.

Sorry should add that if you think you are experiencing a side effect please notify your doctor so it can be logged or you can report it yourself on a yellow card these days too. Use the yellow card link on the side: http://www.mhra.gov.uk/index.htm

What kind of research? Most of this stuff is off limits to the public. Most medics wanting this information would call the manufacturer's med info line but it is not available to patients. I would say your best bet is to either go to your doctor or to avail yourself of the kindness of one our resident medics to get the info for you but you will need to specify which drug etc.

Tricky. You'll need to get someone to do some literature searching - but it can be hit and miss if you don't know the subject. I can look later for you but it won't be for a bit

The BNF should have key papers for the drug listed, no?

(I can't remember my logon details but it's free to register and look at the book online)

ETA - just seen your extra info, I think DC is right tbh, unless you can find a tame doc who'll help you out?

This site https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ is where you can search clinical papers of published research. It will only have details of what papers are available though, and possibly a short abstract. If you find something that you think may be of more interest that you want to read in full, you can order the article from the british library by providing the citation listed on pubmed.

Needless to say, the listings are of papers published in medical journals, by medics for medics, so not really in patient-friendly language, however, as a non-scientist working in pharma, I can normally glean what I need from a paper. As with anything though, a lot is about context so only you and your doctor will know what may or not apply to your particular case, but your doctor should be willing to discuss your concerns.

    HTH

    D

Edited to add, some journals are more respected than others, and the credibility of the papers is therefore usually weighted accordingly.

I would still stand by my original suggestion of PIL and BNF. These 2 incorporate the most recent safety evidence and advice. Additionally it is too simplistic to just look at the negative effects of taking the drug, one should offset that against the negative long term effects of not taking the drugs. It is true the domperidone is considered to be a rather dubious medication (as evidenced by your note above about the FDA not licensing it - although the FDA are not the be all and end all of drug safety it must be said!), but also very beneficial in certain settings and since most of the side effects of that are quite evident you would be able to report them and stop the drug if necessary. If you disagree with your gastroenterologist then you could seek a second opinion.

I'll need more specific info to get anything useful - what kind of negatives, what's it being used for etc I'm sure you've got a specific issue in mind or you wouldn't be asking ?

But tbh I think DC is probably right

Cheers hazel, that would be great. my concern is really with the domperidone, and i dont know how long its been around for and what kind of studies there are about its long term use. i have no side effects, but thats not the issue, i want to know more about the drug, both in fact. i know what they both do, i ve gone in to that in great detail. is that enough?

DC - i appreciate your responses, but i feel your trying to second guess the issue, and i dont want to go into the specifics of it. one of my good mates is a gp, but i cant go to him with this for several reasons which i wont go into. yes, i can go to another gp, but he will simply refer me to a second gastro, and i dont want that. i know what my (medical ?) issue is, I just want to know more about the drugs.

edited to add - that one issue which i can say is that i think my gastro is at the limit of his knowledge with me (and his tether ?), and is rather grasping at straws, so i want to increase mu knowledge, and it doesnt matter if something is in medical speak, i ll look up and translate it to lay-speak

I'll see what I can find - but as I said earlier, it's not easy when you don't know the topic as it's hard to know the nuances (which researchers you trust, which journals are good, what other studies there are etc)

I'm not trying to second guess your issue. Just that this (pharmacovigilance/drug safety) is my full time occupation and without being patronising I am trying to explain the complexity of what you are trying to ask. Your specific issue is of no particular interest to me I assure you but it is hard to provide anything more than general responses to general issues and in this instance I don't think that is going to answer your concerns.

As I suggested to you before the PIL and BNF will contain relevant information - have you actually looked there yet?

If you have what may be considered an unusual issue the chances are it will not have even have been noted in a study, due to various reasons of sample size and event incidence rate.

NickJ, if all you want is general info on the drugs and their history, then get Hazel to cc me in.

I've covered gastro services at work, and I have access to all the major gastro (and plenty of minor) journals.

Omeprazole hasn't been around all that long - licensed about 12 yearsish in this country if my memory serves me righty - so no-one will really know the really long term effects.

I think domperidone is older - not sure.

Nick - I can't do it tonight, but I can give you the outline of the report which was produced for the coroner by an expert explaining the longterm efect of the drugs, as my Dad was a PPI user for 10yrs & had both in the last 5 years of his life.

It also helped My baby Son's gastric Consultant decide to wean him off both once he was stable after his bowel surgery due to what my Dad had going on & myself having had/have Liver problems.
