OOH I used to love stovies at school. Although I think what we got served was probably not the proper stuff. It was more like mash with pink bits in. Possible corend beef. Kept you warm though!

    What are stovies? ?

It isnt really a Glaswegian thing is it, we tend to go more for deep fried pizza, pizza crunch (pizza dipped in batter and deep fried) and deep fried mars bars ?

It is a glasweigian thing too Smiley, they just have gravy with it. ?

It's potatoes, onions and meat (usually sausages, roast beef or something similar) all cooked in one pan with a bit of water. It was really a bit of a poor mans dish using cheaper cuts of meat or to use up left over meat from a Sundayt. It's a stick to your ribs winter warmer and bloomin' lovely.

I'm from Edinburgh and never had a Stovie? Mince and tatties are good though, we made it last week and reminded me of being a child again!

I love stovies, mum used to make it with leftover stew and add lard I think.

I would clart it in tomato ketchup too- yum.

Never had stovies made with sausages though.

Mrs Magic, honestly, I have never had them, and I have lived in Glasgow since I was born (I am 37)

I have heard of them, but that is cos my friend from Aberdeen talks about them.

I have had corned beef hash. Is that the same? ?

The best stovies are made with corned beef, topped with tomato sauce and served with oatcakes.

(I know officially its corned beef hash - not stovies)

I used to love my papas stovies, I loved the smell of them cooking.

MrJ makes stovies at his work sometimes but hasn't made them at home for quite a few years.

    I am intrigued.

Right, how do I make these 'stovie' things and I will give it a shot.

I don't have any recipes (I've never cooked them) but I cannae believe you've never tried stovies, having lived in Glasgow all your life. ? I'm just down the road in Ayrshire.

Google for recipes, there are a lot to pick from.

We just boil the potatoes, crumble in the corned beef add some browned onions and stock and mix it all together.

It appears that there are as many variations on cooking methods as there is 'beef'

Some ideas here - might try a few myself (although i'm useless in the kitchen)

    Ugh - potted haugh.

My Grandparents used to feed me that with boiled potatoes. Goodness only knows what part of an animal was in that pot, grim.

Mind you this was the same Granda who said he would make up some roast beef sandwiches for the buffet at my 21st - he actually used tongue instead of roast beef. Hopefully everyone was too drunked to notice ?

Bleurgh, tongue. I worked in a Deli when I was at Uni, and a wee woman used to come in and order tongue for her dog ! ?

I never tasted it, I hated the smell when I was slicing it in the machine. I often wondered if it smelled of bad breath! ?
