SEAMSTRESS NIGHTMARE

MrsP:), 11 May, 2014 at 15:07 Posted on Planning 0 7

So I got one bridesmaids dress back for my Bm to try on as she went for her fitting first and it is horrendous! Its longer at the front than the back and longer on the left than the right, now im worried about my dress and everyone elses outfits! Shes a family friend and I dont want it to be awkward but this isn't right. I feel like I want the other outfits back to take them to a different seamstress who isnt a family friend but how do I do that without upsetting her? HELP ME!!!!

This is no help but I'm having to choose between a friend doing taking my dress up, my OH's suit jacked and waist coat in and also my sons waist coat for free as she offered to do it and is experienced just never done wedding attire or pay for a seamstress and what's happened to you is a big worry as I wouldn't want to upset a friend.

I'd try and ask her to have a second look at it while you BM is in it, that's the only advice I have. Best of luck!

Was the family friend there while the BM was trying it on? Does she seem happy with her work?

I'd mention the problems politely and just mention the length differences & other problems and ask if she'll be fixing them.

Your other option is taking it to a different seamstress to fix her problems but that's going to cost you more money although it's saving hurting her feelings.

Think you'll have to be upfront about it though and tell her about it, if she doesn't have the confidence or ability to fix it tell her thanks a lot for all her help but that you'll take it somewhere else.

You could try an aaproach along the lines of you must be doing sommething wrong as you can't get the dress to hang right and then go back with it and ask her to have a close look. You can point out where it's not right and see what she says and take it form there. Tough situation though. x

    Thanks for the advice.

I just had to confront the situation so I politely called and said that I had got my bridesmaid to try on the dress and it wasn't "sitting right". She seemed quite worried about her work actually, she said that she was really careful and measured everything exactly the same but she said the dress must have been like that when I got it. She said I could go around straight away with my bridesmaid and its fixable! Thank god! I also picked up my dress, the other BM's dresses and an ushers outfit that had to be altered! I am now rushing home on the weekend (2hours away) to get the other bridesmaids dresses tried on. Hopefully there will be no problems. Watch this space!

Are the bridesmaid dresses chiffon? I ask because I'm having a b*** of a job shortening my daughters' dresses evenly: two of them are bias cut and because there's a tiny bit of strech as they put them on something which is perfectly straight when the material isn't under tension comes up exactly as you describe, shorter on one side and at the front (or back). I got round it be using a dummy with exactly the right dimensions, and in one case pinning and tacking all the way while it was being worn. It actually looks wonky when flat, but straight being worn! It may be that your seamstress is actually doing it straight, but needs the BM there!

Funnily enough they are chiffon! The seamstress did say perhaps she should have pinned it all the way around as it turns out she pinned it to length at the front and the cut off the same all the way around hen the error. It should all be sorted but I have the other two BM dresses to try on this weekend as they both live two hours away. Fingers crossed!!

Thanks for the support Smiley smile

This exactly. Chiffon is the worlds most horrid fabric as a dressmaker!
