Seeing children out and about who should be in school

Roobarb, 21 October, 2008 at 11:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Does anyone else find think that town centres/shopping centres seem to have a very high proportion of children (often with parents) that are quite evidently old enough to be in school, wandering about during school times?

It really gets on my nerves, it's hard enough to try and go shopping at times you can avoid the little buggers given the amounts of holidays they get, without them bloody creeping about when they should be at school.

Or am I just jealous as my parents never let me be off school, and even if I had something like a dr's/hospital appointment that I had to get out of school for (rare) I was frogmarched back to school straight after?

October week was last week. Hence why I expected to be able to go to Braehead yesterday and avoid schoolchildren. Grr.

October week was last week but yesterday and today are in-service days so the children are not at school.

They're not inservice days here (Renfrewshire) the kids are back - well my CM had her school children yesterday anyway and next door's kids don't appear to be about.

It's not just this week anyway, it's just that this has prompted the post, it happens all the time including times when I know the schools are definitely back and I'm tripping up over school children in town when I nip out to get my lunch etc.

I know what you mean , there does seem to be children of a school age out & about during school time.

When i was off school ill as a youngster , i wasn't allowed to move outside the house , "if you're not fit enough for school , you're fit enough for nowt else" the words of my mother as i begged to play out.

On another note though , we went on holiday to Cyprus (our son would have been 4 ) & a rather rude lady came up to us in the street & said " i think it's ridiculous that you've taken your child out of school for a holiday". I explained that he wasn't yet old enough for school & she said well how am i supposed to know he's too tall for 4 , the cheek.

A lot of schools near where I live seem to stagger their holidays, so although it might not be October half term for one school, it is for the one in the next town...

My daughter is off school today due to industrial action by the teachers.

I was never allowed time off school unless i was really ill.

I have never heard of 'October week' but around here half term is MOSTLY next week, depending on the schools I think.

However, when I was meant to be at school I would quite often go in for registration, then leave and go into town/to a friend's house. I hated school and walked out a lot in the last year, so I can't really complain about school kids not being at school now (which isn't such an issue round here as it was in Redditch, there used to be hordes of us)

Nope, never heard of October week or September weekend either!

My kids are off next week for half term, but some of the private schools nearby are already off for two weeks.

My son had an inset day yesterday and we were at the shops.

Last week there was a day when he was on a course that was school related so we were at the shops when it finished,as by the time we got back to the school he would have only have been in lessons for about 20 minutes.

Also our school state that if a child has been sick (vomiting) they have to bee off school for 48 hours after the last vomiting incident, so they may well be OK but not allowed back into school.

Could be they had dental appointments etc and were grabbing some lunch in their school lunchour before going back to class?

In some places it's half term this week and in others (as in our area) it's next week, so they could well be on holiday!

Also, schools have INSET days at different times so you can;t always be sure they're skiving off.

It is the holiday time at the moment. If I was at work and not off sick I'd be on half term this week but most of my friends who teach in other areas are off the week after me.

I do however see lots of kids around when we go out in the community with my class.

I remember when I was doing some supply in my final teaching practise school after I qualified before the summer and one day we had a visit from the police. They told us that they'd found one of our kids in the Trafford Centre with their grandma. They have quite a large operation there stopping and questioning kids and the adults with them as to why they are there if its not holiday time. The boy never admitted it to us at school, told us he was poorly!

Schools here are in. THe school bus goes past the back of our house so I've seen the kids.

Anyway, it does seem to be a pretty frequent occurrence and often they're not in school uniform which would kind of suggest that they're not on their way back to school after appointments. I just like trying to shop when there's as few kids as possible about ?

    October week? What's October week?

I had Tattie holidays when I was in school - and yes, I did do tattie picking. ?

All the state and indy schools go off at different times so I find it difficult to know whether or not kids are out of school illegally or not...

I'm ? at the woman saying he's too tall for 4 years - cheeky biatch!

Its a week off in October ! ?

September weekend is a weekend off in September.

    Its genius ! ?

Edited to say: What is the holiday in Febraury called? Is that mid/half term? On the 14th of February. Is it half/mid anything? ?

Oh, then there is Easter, which sometimes isnt at Easter, as they have now fixed 2 weeks, the same 2 weeks every year, so sometimes it manages to span Easter, mostly it doesnt so the schools get a weekend off at 'real Easter'. ?

Some independent schools have two weeks off for half term so are already off - such as the one where my Mum works and the one my sister goes to.

We don't start half term until next Friday here, but we always have kids hanging around. Although not in school uniform. This is the downfall to living in a seaside town and parents taking their kids out of school to come down.

We do have posters everywhere in town thou as the local secondary school are trying to cut down on their 'missing' pupils and it shows their school uniform and colours and school badge on the poster so you can idenify them and then ring the school to report them.
