Self-Catering Vs All-Inclusive?

FutureMrsWilson, 26 April, 2011 at 16:15 Posted on Planning 0 14

As soon as the travel agents start bookings for next year we're going to book our honeymoon. Thing is, we can't decide whether to go for All-Inclusive or Self-Catering. OH has never been to Greece (place of choice) and hasn't been abroad since he was a child, but on reading the words 'unlimited' he is stoked about going All-Inclusive. Me on the other hand cannot stand the HUGE hotels with 100s of rooms, and having to eat at the same buffet all day, everyday not knowing who has been sticking their fingers in the food before you came along. We don't have the budget to go All-Inclusive and have enough money to eat out if the food is awful. And I prefer trying different tavernas each night, I don't want to sit around in the same packed hotels for 2 weeks. Would rather go to a nice, small apartment block, and worse comes to worse, cook our own food. Urgh! Opinions?

Im with you, although all Inclusive is often better value its all just a bit dull and you dont get to try their proper cuisine as they try and tailor it to foreigners plus you are in the same place every night you dont see nearly as much of the culture, self catering all the way for me! (I have never been to greece tho!)

I love AI! Provided you check Trip Advisor before booking, you can't really go wrong. Haven't been on a bad AI holiday for that very reason. I ❤️ Trip Advisor!

WSS - we are going AI and we have 11 restaurants to chose from, so no eating the same for us, and only one of those is buffet, the rest are like a normal restaurant, without the bill at the end.

It's worth a good look around to see if there is anywhere simular in Greece?

Thanks everyone, definitely some good options there!
I'm as we speak going through the brochure and checking out the prices for small Half Board accommodation.
It may be the perfect compromise!

Depends on the place. When I go places like Sharm, Turkey, or far away like Mexico I would go All Inclusive - Greece or Cyprus - no way, too many tempting places to eat out that would take my fancy xx

It really depends on the place. I would not at all go AI to Greece! Part of the charm of Greece is sitting in a little taverna eating greek food overlooking a harbour. AI in Greece would just be so wrong... SC all the way for me!

I've been on holiday AI and it isn't always as bad as you think, but wouldn't go in Europe. I also know what you mean about large hotels.

Try selling the taverna life... ?

We're going AI when we go to Barbados and staying in a smallish hotel that has 88 rooms. We can visit other hotels in their chain and have our meals there so we should hopefully get some variety. I don't mind if we don't as I'm going there for the celebs beaches, friendliness of the island etc not the food.

Every year All Inclusive holidays are becoming more popular and have become the number one choice of holidays for the British holiday market.

Exactly this. Our honeymoon is AI (Mexico) resort has 9 restaurants so we won't get bored. Wouldn't go AI in europe though...especially Greece.

OH and I went All Inclusive for our honeymoon - it wasn't a swanky hotel, but it did save us having to venture out and find eating places - bearing in mind our destination was Domincian Republic and it was advised by the Foreign Office at the time to stay in the resorts and only go on proper official tours. They did have a wide variety of food on offer. I remember one "night" they did a paella night - hmmmmmm that was delicious! We didnt need to buy drinks either as being All Inclusive they were well included.

If we do go back, we want to stay in a different hotel so may not go AI but we will see

The other issue is that with a good AI i find i put on sooo much weight as theres too much choice and i want to try a little of everything because it all looks soo good plus the free flowing cocktails by the pool etc all the hard work and dieting pre wedding will soon be lost in 2 weeks. Decisions decisions.

This is what I was going to say. Would never enter my head to go AI in greece. I have been about 20 times in my life (mostly with parents) but always self catering. It is a safe country so the opportunity to explore is great. The people are amazing as are the tavernas.

We are going to greece on our honeymoon. We havent booked it yet, but like you, plan to do it as soon as we can for next june/july. We were originally going to go to the Caribbean and all inclusive, but in greece i am hoping for self catering, bed and breakfast maybe. The greek islands are so lovely and the food is so delicious that i would not want to be stuck in the hotel all the time eating the same food. Part of the charm of greece for me is finding those lovely restaurants with lovely views. I cant wait Smiley smile

Do you know what island you would like yet? Im set on santorini but still open to suggestions. Btw, when do they start selling next years holidays?

We've been AI twice and are going again in a couple of weeks too. Turkey was AI and the food was amazing. Not a huge hotel but 4 star so the food was beautiful and because the buffets are so large and cater for each and every persons taste, there's no way we were bored! We also went AI to Tunisia which was also a good selection but in Tunisia, at the time we went, it wasn't really safe to eat anywhere other than in hotels! Don't get me wrong, we love Tunisia and have been 6 times but you do have to be careful if you venture out.
