Selling clothes to poor countries

HeidiHole, 15 May, 2008 at 15:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

How is this allowed?

I've just had a leaflet through the door asking for clothes donations, in small writing at the bottom it says that they sell them onto poorer countries. Well if I want to donate my clothes I'll donate them, not pass them on so someone can make money out of it.

It may well be legal, but morally, ick.

I used to get these as well- they always annoyed me as very little effort was made to make it clear that the clothes would be sold, not given.

Having said that, people often have old clothes they can't be bothered to do anything with, and it's better that they get sold to someone who could use them than thrown away. My only issue with it is that it should be made very clear that this is what's happening.

I know a tiny bit about this - it's been reported to the ASA loads of times but it's proved impossible to track down the people who run the schemes. It's been referred to the OFT but they'll probably have the same problem - because it's leaflets and usually unregistered businesses they just change tack as soon as anyone gets close.

That's terrible! What charities do this? I normally just bag up stuff and drop them off at charity shops so don't pay attention to these bags

We have these bags and i leave themoutside, empty. I do leave chairty bags out but only when I see them collecting and ask for ID as I was told the naughty 'make them pay for your old cast-off's' men would take the ' give them your cast off's for nothing' bags and sell them anyway.

HH I mailed you and you ignored me. Humph. <pulls a leg of boris>

Why would I care that you've pulled Boris' leg <whistles> ? When did you mail me?

KN, I see what you're saying, but I think people who wouldn't give their old clothes to a 'normal' charity are hardly like to give them to one that's out to make money. Gah, I wanted to follow the delivery person up the path and kick them in the tooshy, but it's not their fault is it ?

I never knew they did that, my mum often fills those bags and then it doesn't get collected. Very annoying.

Meh, we get these through the door, too. They get thrown straight back outside on to the doorstep.

The other problem we have is other people nicking charity bags. You put a bag full of stuff outside, and a van pulls up, and loads it up into the van. You think that is on it's way to Oxfam/Red Cross, or whatever, but no, it's going to some company who will sell the stuff on. The last time I saw a van do this, I noted the registration number down, but because it was a Polish van, no-one could do anything about it.?

We turn the bags inside out and use them as a bin liner - they fit our kitchen bin perfectly!

I think this is so dodgy. It's been on Watchdog, but they said there is nothing that can be done about it. If I've got stuff I don't want any more I take it directly to the charity shop (our local one is for a children's hospice) so that I know that they've got it - I don't trust those bags that come through the door after reading things about people stealing them and people selling the clothes on.

This is exactly why I'd rather make a special trip into town to drop bags off at the charity shop - at least I know they've gone to the charity I choose then. Makes you sick doesn't it? Stealing from a charity

Grrthose companies annoy me. They always put a company number on the bag/leaflet to try and fool people that they are a charity and imply that it is their charity number.

I once put a bag out for Marie Curie and knew that these buggers were coming the same day so I was watching out for them. They ran up my drive and grabbed the Marie Curie bag. Luckily my street is a dead end so when they turned round and came back up I stood in the middle of the road to stop their van and demand my bag back, twats.
