Sensible wedding rings

Cat In A Teacup, 5 July, 2013 at 19:25 Posted on Planning 0 7

Evening all!

I run a coffee shop so currently don't wear my engagement ring to work, a mixture of health and safety rules with food prep and the fact I spend a lot of time scrubbing things with degreaser/puly powder and other lovely chemicals. I would love to have an 18ct white gold ring to fit with my engagement ring but I am considering getting something a bit more hard wearing such as titanium so I could wear it to work without worrying about it tarnishing. This would probably mean that I couldn't wear the two together as I feel it would look a bit odd.

So, did anyone forgo a 'traditional' wedding ring in favour of a more sensible one and what did you do with your E ring?

Thanks!

I've got a tungsten carbide wedding ring. Hardest thing known to man. Unscratchable - in fact, it leaves marks in brick walls. Gunmetal grey, wierd luminescence. £20, job done.

No engagement ring to match to. Perhaps my choice of wedding ring will indicate that I am not a jewellery person Smiley smile

No reason not to wear titanium with your e ring as long as you get a shiny silvery titanium. Also consider platinum since it's hard wearing. Having said that, I had to get my w ring re engraved 2 months after getting married after forgetting to take it off when climbing in Skye!

    Thanks for the replies ?

I was told by the jewellers that I shouldn't wear a different metal to my engagement ring as they would rub against each other and wear down the metal. Is that a jewellers lie to get me to spend more money?!

I wore my 18ct yellow gold band every day for 18 years while working in a lab and scrubbing my hands 6 times a day on average. It still looks like new. My engagement ring got damaged and worn over time as the raised stones and design got caught on all sorts/trapped in doors etc, and necessitated several repairs over the years. I know that white gold isn't what it used to be (the engraving on my Mum's is still fine after 50 years) but if it's just a matter of redipping I would go for something not too detailed that goes well with your engagement ring and just go for it.

Not a lie, it has a solid basis in chemistry. But if you don't wear your engagement ring to work, so you'll only be having the two rings together at night times, then it's going to take a fair amount of time.

    This.

Gold is about a 2.5 on the Moh's scale of hardness. Some people wear platinum and gold together but I personally wouldn't (platinum is a 4.5 or so).

Titanium is a 6 so I would say that's definitely too hard to be wearing with gold.

Ah! Glad it wasn't a lie, I did think that it made scientific sense. Thank you for your help, now I just have a little over 2 years to decide what to have!
