Sewing machines

cinnamon009, 7 January, 2015 at 11:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

After deciding I need a new hobby, sewing is coming top of the list of things I have always wanted to master. I am looking at beginner courses to go on after the honeymoon but most state that to get the most out of the course to bring along your own machine (although it isn't absolutely necessary). I also need something at home to practice on. I am confident this is something I will stick with, even if its just making cushions and curtains for the new house.

Does anyone do sewing and recommend any machines that are easy to master but will be useful when I progress too (ie not too basic).

I've got a little John Lewis one that suits me for what I need it for but they do do a full size one for about £100 I think. They are quite basic but not sure it will hold you back. I'm not sure what other bells and whistles it can have TBH!

This is the one I mean:

I sew everything by hand and if I need a machine I use Mum's which is a super old Singer one with a metal pedal that she got from a junk place.

Janome do good machines - I've had mine for yonks and it's ace. Not a basic model but not one full of functions I'll never use and also very usable.

This is the updated version of mine:

Thanks everyone. I'm leaning towards a Janome machine as most reviews I have read seem to suggest these as a good solid machine and the classes I will be going to use these as their base training machine. Excited to be starting a hobby that I can develop. Smiley smile

I'd get the John Lewis one BECAUSE THEY ARE PRETTY ... but don't listen to me, I've never used a sewing machine in my life!

My dad bought me a second hand Janome machine about 4 years ago and its still going strong (the local college decided to drop the arts/craft classes so sold off all their machines etc)..

I have a singer promise that I got on special in hobbycraft and I love it. Easy to use - even for me! I'm a complete novice and taught myself with it.

I've heard great stuff about Janome and, when I was looking in to doing a sewing course, the lady running them recommended the Janome 7025:

I brought a quite fancy janome a couple of weeks ago and have finally finished my patchwork blanket that I started 2 years ago! I had a Toyota before that and wasn't a massive fan. Do it- you won't regret it!
