Shaping a wedding band to fit E-ring - cost?

Buzzee, 19 January, 2011 at 20:32 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hello

Just wondered if anyone had got their plain wedding band shaped to fit their engagement ring and if so what the cost is. We've just had Smooch round (very nice sales guy and price for basic ring is great) but they want £150 to shape it to my e-ring. Would also need to give them my e-ring for up to a month. Just wondered if anyone had been to a high street jeweller to have theirs done and what the cost is. It will be palladium if that helps.

Thanks

Give them your e-ring for a month!!! blimey, there is no way I would do that. My wedding ring is shaped to fit but I was very lucky in that the w-ring I found was already a great fit with my e-ring, it was a one off antique band that had been sold but the jeweller kindly took a mould of it and made a new one up for me. They did get me to try the mould just to double check before they went ahead and made the ring up.

I'm not sure what the costs would be as I dont use high street jewellers, only independant ones, hopefully someone here can help you with that Smiley smile

    Hi Fleur

I know - i've only just got the e-ring, don't want to give it up already!

Sorry, by high street i just meant 'not an online' jeweller - would like an idea of what independents would cost too if poss!

    Thanks

If I was you, I would go to a few of your local independant jewellers and ask them how much they would charge if you bought the ring to them to be shaped. Dont go to well known stores like Ernest Jones etc as they do not have jewellers on site who can do these things, everything has to be sent away which is why it takes so long. Plus they will charge you a ridiculous amount as they include overheads, staffing costs.. etc etc.... You will get a far better service from an established local jeweller and you can rest safe in the knowledge that, if they did need your e-ring for the day, it would not be leaving their shop!. I cant give you a cost of mine I'm afraid as it was a jewellers in New York that did it for me and the cost was just to make the ring for me as the shape was already perfect.

    Good luck ?

Where do you live winterbride? Could you get to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham? I bet they could do it for you in a day to be honest, and it's meant to be very competitively priced too. Failing that my friend went to a jewellers in leeds to have hers done because they could do it in a day too (she didn't want to hand hers over for ages either.) Could find out the details if you like?

I'd 100% go for an independant jeweller as thats what ive done, its saved me a fortune too!! My ring is diamond shaped so needed one either cut out from a plain band or shaped.

Fleur is right, the high street stores try and charge alot to bespoke the ring to fit. Like smooch one was trying to charge me £175 on top of the ring! and they wanted the ring for 6-8 weeks too! so I went back to the drawing board and ended up researching and going into a few local bespoke jewellers in my town (Newcastle) and I went in last thurs to discuss in depth style, width, size finish etc and pick them up this saturday - so will flash them together when done!

I dont know which area in London you are in but Im originally from hertfordshire and we did get a quote from a local bespoke jeweller in Cambridge - its fairly famous and popular in the area so it would be worth travelling for - Harriet kelsall designs is the name.

Let me know if I can help in any other way Smiley smile

I am having to have a wedding ring made to fit too.

I went to about 5 independant jewelers in the Jewelry Quarter in Bham to discuss it with them. Three of the jewelers said they would charge anything from £50 - £100 and would need my ring for 2-3 weeks for a bespoke service, this is on top of the price for the ring itself (dependent on weight of metal used). They said we would just discuss what I want, they would go away and make it. This didn't really help me at all as I have real trouble visualising what I want it to be like (i.e. the options of how it could fit around it and what I prefer).

2 of the jewellers however we fantastic and spent lots of time with me, showing me that they can make a wax model of the wedding ring (after discussing options) within 20/30 minutes and you can then physically try on this wax model to see how it looks / sits with your engagement ring, changing it then if nescessary. This was a big thing for me to be able o see it physically. There was no charge for this and no obligation once they did this. Once the model is then what you want they weigh it and have an equation with the price of the metal that day to give you an exact price before you commit. They then make the ring for you to pick up a week later. These two jewelers were both small businesses with the workshop above the shop.

If you are in London maybe visit Hatton Garden (near Farringdon train/tube station) which is the London equivalent of the jewelry quarter. I will be visiting there myself too as I work close by.

I think going to a few places is a good idea and a trip to Bham would be more than worth it.

Price wise, for a 3-4mm platinum band shaped to fit my ring they gave me a rough price of £500 but it all depends on the weight and price of metal on that day.

Hope that helps (sorry for the waffle).

ETA - actually top price was around £400 but other was more around £300. £500 was for my OH wedding band.

    Hi Wonky ( date twin/triplet, , ,lol )

It looks like we also share the same ring dilema . I live North of Birmingham and am planning a trip to The JQ to get my ring.

I would be so grateful if you could tell me the name of the 2 shops that were most helpful because I too have to have a ring shaped around my ER

    thanks Wonky, , , xx

No problem, my favourite was https://vault88.com/ which was a husband/wife team. The wax model guy wasn't in on the day (it was a few days before Xmas) and he suggested that when I go back to discuss designs with them and get a model made that I give them a call to check that the wax modelling guy would be there on that day.

The other one was a much bigger jeweller that sells tons of wedding rings called Erics https://jewelleryquarter.net/directory/erics/ and is actually where my parents got their wedding rings from 35 years ago.The guy who helped me loads was an Aussie (can't for the life of me remember his name though).

I am from Solihull and my OH bought my ER ring from somewhere else so I'd really like to get my wedding ring from home in the JQ if possible.I am planning on going back early summer to get it done. Other things need to be bought and paid for first!

    Hope that helps!

    Hey,

    We went with Bliss Rings.

Mr ER is square shaped and full of diamonds so i went for a plain band and it was £240. It's thicker than i expected it to be and the sales lady was amazing and threw in a bunch of freebies for BM's and Groomsmen too! And they only need your ring for few days!

They visit you at home like Smooch and if you live in London you'd probably get the lovely Lisa like i did.

If your ring is not that unusually shaped, ie a square round, pear etc, you could try wedding rings direct, they have a rings already shaped at competitive prices and you can order a sample in silver to see if it fits before purchasing the actual ring. The one i wanted had a 1mm gap that meant it wouldn't fit but its worth a try as theirs are cheaper...

I went to an independant jewellers. I tried Quality diamonds (Milton Keynes and Hatton gardens, but they wanted £1,200) so I went to our local family run jewellers and mine cost me £800(ish - I cant remember exact price) including the diamonds.

I was without my ring for a good 5 or 6 weeks, but I'd rather that, than not have it fit. Was very pleased with the end result.

We went to a small local jewellers and he said he could shape my wedding ring (which is a yellow gold one belonging to OH's great randmother originally) to fit my engagement ring for £50-£60 and this includes resizing it as its too big. He showed me one he already had to show me what it would look like and it looks fine. He said if I took it one sat morn first thing I could pick it up at shop close that evening. Not done it yet but planning to in next month or so.

    Hi Winterbride,

I just wanted to mention our price promise before you look elsewhere. There is more detail on the website, but it basically means that if you find the same ring, of the same quality, we will refund the difference.

    Thanks...

    Laura
