Sharm El Sheikh... anyone been?

Minx Sauce, 28 August, 2008 at 16:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Looking to go here for a week. After a 4 star AI deal as apparantly it's not advisable to venture out after dark?

Just after a bit of sunshine really, but would like a nice hotel near the beach if poss?

Budget - about £1k-£1.5k for 2 adults.

Any recs? Have searched on various sites but there's so many hotels I'm all confused ?. And they all differ hugely on the review sites too, so can't even use that as a judge. Personal recs would eb fab if poss?

Huge thanks in advance,

Minx x

First up - there are very few beaches and those that are there are man-made.

I've never heard Sharm described as unsafe after dark - Naama Bay (which is the central point) comes alive then.

What sort of things are you after from your hotel?

We went to Sharm about 3 years ago. I don't know if it has changed but I really wouldn't have said that it was unsafe at night at all. We stayed in a fairly cheap hotel at the end of the beach - which was about a 20-30 min walk from the main centre. We walked in along the path next to the beach which was very well lit and felt very safe. There were tourist police everywhere and everywhere was very clean and tidy. You do get hassled a bit by shop owners but this is all very friendly and they will leave you alone if you keep telling them no!

I definitely wouldn't suggest going AI but that is probably because I love wandering around all the restaurants and choosing where to eat. We ate in different restaurants each night (for a fortnight) and had some fabulous food - the seafood was fantastic. It was also really cheap to eat out so prob a better bargain than going AI.

Our hotel was good for what it was but was across the road from the beach (about 10 min walk to beach) so prob not what you are looking for.

In your opinion, which would be the better area to stay... Naama Bay or Nabq Bay?

Is one better than the other? We've found a 5* hotel AI in Nabq Bay, but it's right at the very top, is that a long way out from all the fun/hussle & bussle?

We'd like the odd street market to visit during the day/night and maye a lively bar or two....?

We stayed in Sharm at the coral sea resort and it was beautiful we didnt go out of our complex, we just wanted to chill and everything we needed was there but we didn't hear it was unsafe at night,

That's in Nabq Bay isn't it? What was it like? Was the beach ok? Was there things to do during the day if needed?

Nabq Bay is by the airport and about 20 mins taxi journey (an experience) to Naama Bay. There is nothing in Nabq Bay other than hotels. If you want easy access to nightlife, stay in Naama Bay.

Personally, when I have gone, I've stayed on the Ras um Sid headland, which is nice and quiet and about 10 mins drive to Naama Bay.

Ooo thanks for this. I think we're going to go for Naama Bay then. Done.

What's eating out like? We intend to spend most days lazing by the pool/resort but would like a wander out a few nights if possible. Is is wise to go AI or would B&B be better if cheap to eat/drink out?

I would say B&B. It's so hot you're not going to be drinking booze all day long and you probably won't want to eat 3 times a day.

HB or B&B is plenty. There are lots of different types of restaurant and old Sharm town is also good to explore.

    Hi,

We got engaged in April in Sharm and stayed in an up and coming area of Sharm called Shark's Bay. It is on the beach and we stayed at the 4* Hilton Shark's Bay and it was amazing. It was like being in the Caribbean without the long flight and jet lag! The hotel was not too big and had a good mix of people. It was a quick 15min bus/cab ride into Naama bay. We hated Naama bay - it was like a cross between Blackpool and Las Vegas! If you want a busy nightlife with lots of cheap shops and tat and casinos with slot machines then stay in Naama but we were glad that we were only visiting and not staying there. Hope that helps

Normally I'd hate that kind of thing but after taking advice on a holiday in July ("don't stay there as it's horrible... stay just outside where it's quiet and get the bus in"), we had the worst holiday ever. And wish we'd been staying in the midst of it all.

So this time we're def going for the tourist area, tacky or not! ?.

Well take rehydration packs with you then. It's about 40 degrees there at the minute and unless you consume water on a pretty high basis you will get very dehydrated, very quickly.

Will do, thanks (again) for the tip. I don't usually drink much while away to be fair, think I only had a couple of bottles of beer during the entire week away last time. H on the other hand, would have a beer with breakfast if available! ?
