Shocking dress realisation!

drifter, 1 March, 2009 at 12:48 Posted on Planning 0 7

Ok Ok so the title is a bit dramatic but I think i may have encountered a tiny wedding dress problem.

Yesterday I was in town post hair cut and while wondering round thought I would do some wedding dress nosing and poped into beratex brides, it is a relative large shop with pleanty of dresses. Now while my wedding isn't until next year and i have vowed not to try dresses on for a while I do look when I get the oportunity.

So here is the problem I dodn't like any of the dresses! and this isn't the first time this has happened I have looked in a couple of other dress shops and not liked them.

When I say I don't like them it's not that I don't think they are lovely dresses but that they just aren't me and on the wholw without even trying them on I know they would look ridiculous on me.

In reterospect when I think about all the dresses I have looked at on the net I feel the same way with maybe one or two exceptions in the collections of some of the upperend of the market designers.

Now I am filled with panic should I revise my time scale for looking for dresses? clearly I am not as I imagined going to fall inlove with every dress I try on (I thought the only hard part of finding a dress would be picking just one!)

Sigh anyone any suggestions?

On a more posative note met up with our photographer a couple weeks ago to select our final package and he is great, I love his photos even more and he is such an easy guy to get on with I am happy he will take photos we love.

Right I think I shall distract my self by agonising over colour schems now!

x

PS at least i love my new hair

Maybe you haven't seen one that you like because you aren't in the mindset to actually look yet IYKWIM, the dress for you may be the one at the very back of the shop, one that is hidden from sight, one that everyone else has just walked by.

Get yourself some bridal mags and decide on the style you are looking for then go into a bridal shop and ask to see all those dresses in that style, I'm sure you will find one soon enough ?

Until you've actually tried a few styles on, you shouldn't discount anything. What looked best on me were dresses I would never have picked in a magazine or even have liked the look of on the hanger!

Drifter, I felt exactly the same. All the dresses I saw online before I bought one just looked the same to me. Not meaning to offend anyone, but they were all strapless and a-line or at least most of them were. Just variations on a theme. There's nothing wrong with strapless a-line drresses, but I just didn't think they were me. And I must admit, that I do sigh a bit when I see yet another wedding with the same sort of dress.

I wasn't really looking for my dress when I bought mine. I just happened to pop into Monsoon, and remembered that they did wedding dresses, so thought I'd have a look. Saw one I liked on the hanger, tried it on, bought it and matching shoes too! All in the space of ten minutes!

So my advice would be, to keep looking around and you'll find something lovely I'm sure.

Also, you could always have something made just for you. That way you could make it just as you'd like!

    Don't despair!

What Mogwai said - don't give up before you tried any on. I ended up with something very different to what I thought I wanted. I didn't reallly even like my dress on the hanger, but it looked totally different on. Wedding dresses are so different to anything we would normally wear that it's impossible to choose one just be looking at them - you need to try them on!

I felt exactly the same, hence why I ended up trying about 45 dresses on in total.

My main issue was that I didn't want a strapless dress, an A-line dress, nor one with a big skirt. It had to have a train and it had to be ivory.

That narrowed my options down massively. I found it easier to browse online and then visit shops that stocked the dresses I liked. I actually (on the advice of dress shop owners) tried on loads that I knew I didn't want just to be sure in my mind but in the end I got exactly what I wanted. It was an ivory, long sleeved, cowl necked, fish tail dress. I really had to search though, but once I'd actively started looking in the shops, it took less than a month. I'd been looking online for at least 6 months before I went to a shop though.

I really wouldnt worry too much. I was the same. When it came to the day I tried dresses on, prob about 50 in total, there was only a couple that I really liked. The others just gave me an idea of what suited my shape, etc.

Dont worry about it, honestly it'll be fine!! You will find a dress you absolutely adore!
