Should I ask the DJ Any Questions? (E.g. about Contingency Plans in case something goes wrong?)

CristaMB, 27 June, 2014 at 15:38 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi,

Just wondering if you ask your suppliers questions before you book them and what those questions might be?

I asked the photographer various questions such as 'do you have a back-up kit, do you have insurance, how do you back-up the pictures?' - things like that and he got offended, because 'he's a professional'. (Even though I'd stated that I knew he was before I listed the questions!). Once I'd explained that I'd just been told I needed to ask those questions & was asking everybody the same thing, he was fine...

.....But now I'm in the process of booking a DJ and feeling really shy about asking him as well - because looking at his website and reviews, he's a 'professional' too :p

Should I ask him anything? What to ask? And how to do it in a way that doesn't offend?!!

Tsk. With insurance, say your venue want a copy of his certificate if that feels less awkward. A good DJ would be happy to provide it - my H2B certainly would! I'd say with a DJ the most important questions are about your playlists. Do you have everything written down, what you do or don't want played, timings etc?

I'm sorry but a "professional" would welcome those questions and be willing to answer them if they didn't offer the info up. You ask away. It's info you're entitled to.

Christa, the professionals like it when you ask those questions! Yes, I have insurance, back up kit and I back up the photos.... I want you to ask me... the ones that get offended are possibly uncomfortable for some reason or other...

I started typing this ages ago and then forgot to press the post button!

Ask as many questions as you like!

I completely agree with all other suppliers comments, we welcome questions because we are the professionals!

Ask your DJ about playlist etc and if there are any songs you really want/don't want to hear.

For your own peace of mind you must ask questions..... I can't believe anyone would be offended by that.

    Questions to ask....

Do they have back up equipment should something fail on the night?

What would happen if they were taken ill on the night?

Is it themselves that would be the DJ on the night? (There are some unscrupulous companies that take a booking then pass it to another DJ that will do it for the right money!)

Do they accept playlists & requests?

Are they willing to avoid certain songs or genres that you don't want played?

What will they do if no one gets up and dances (love this question! If they say it never happens they are lying!!!!!!)

How long do they take to set up (important if you are having turn around.... setting up can vary between 20 minutes and 2 hours!)

What's their style? ( oh yes... we are all very different. There are the ones that mix and let the music do the talking to the ones that do mic work and entertain)

What will they wear? (If you're in a posh venue a guy in scruffy jeans looks out of place)

Do they have PLI? (A necessity to play in most venues)

    That should keep you going!
