Should i put my foot down???

annandy2007, 31 March, 2008 at 21:04 Posted on Planning 0 23

We are getting married in Scotland and are hiring a cottage for the reception.

My H2B thinks great - honeymoon taken care off....

I can't help thinking we should go off somewhere a bit more...

We go away every year and he thinks honeymoon will be special regardless - we are together etc... and if we stay in Scotland - no delays, dodgy food etc to deal with. Which i know he is right but....

what do other people think???

    Whereabouts in Scotland?

Is there a plush hotel nearby that you could go to for a couple of days after the cottage?

    North Berwick...

We love Scotland and are constantly up there cos of his work so its nothing against Scotland..

Its just.... dunno really.... just a feeling that we should go somewhere different for our honeymoon...

    Totally irrational thoughts again probably..

TBH-if money isn't the primary consideration, I would put my foot down!

We are from the South, but travelled up to Aberdeen (as did our family and friends) to marry, last November.

We travelled back on the Sunday, had a couple of days to chill/prepare, then went on honeymoon on the Tuesday for ten days-3 in Newyork, 3 in San Fransisco and 4 in Hawaai

Hey Ann?, I would say put your foot down. Scotland is beautiful, but if its somewhere you go alot then I can see why you fancy something different as its your honeymoon and you want it to be a one off type thing or different to usual. x

What about the Highlands and Islands instead - still Scotland, but something different and totally breathtaking

I would put m foot down ... I've never been to scotland and would love to go one day but if I had been there before a few times I would definitely want to go somewhere else for my honeymoon so its seems more ... significant (no sure thats the word i'm after but hopefully you get my meaning!)
xxx whatever you do decide though hope you have a lovely honeymoon!

Had a word with H2B and highlands here we come.....

Seems the ideal compromise - something new and different for both of us.

He didn't put up any objection.....bless!!

You can always go on the whisky tour of Islay and Jura - thats what we did a couple of years ago. Gourgeous islands and there are 8 distilleries on Islay and one on Jura,

If you are going up to the highlands and want to have a check out of the islands too (where I'm from) then you can get an island hopping ticket with the ferry company that would let you explore and see the different ones off the West Coast.

I was hoping to get married up in Scotland but cost of getting up there and the issue of getting my gran from the south of England (who bared leaves her house as it is) has meant we are going to stay in Cheshire. That way there will only be about 11 people travelling a significant distance.

Think I'm going to theme it as if it was though!

Reading all of these posts was like.... a breath of fresh air.
I live in scotland and love it, theres soooo much of it I've never seen but I want to. So many of my friends, inc H2b, dont like it for various reasons and would do anything to leave and that saddens me. And then I read about some of you guys, south of the border who are not only complimentary towards scotland but also have a wish to visit the place.

I do hope that when you do get the opportunity to visit new places or even visit for the first time, that you have a great time. All too often we are type cast and the myths that surround us can often be unfounded.

Theres no real point to this post but other than to say thank you. I'm proud of my heritage and it means a lot to see/hear people talk about Scotland with a genuine interest. May all your scottish weddings and honeymoons be as fab as you guys are ?

    Nona x

Can you reccommend any particular island?? We tend to like hisory and old buildings. Love the sea and gentle walking...

    Many thanks

Hellooo, we're getting married in Manchester in Sept then travelling up to Scotland for our honeymoon

(i'm not supposed to know, it's supposed to be a surprise, but I gave H2B some fairly rigid criteria, and he's rubbish at keeping secrets!)

Anyway, we had a couple of reasons for wanting to honeymoon in the UK, and none of them were cost, as plush hotels in the UK can cost more than a week in Majorca!

The main reason was that with all the things we need to organise for the wedding, I didn't want to be organising flights, money, packing and possibly jabs as well.

The second reason was that we wanted somewhere we could return to year after year, somewhere that would grow really special for us, somewhere we could return to if we needed an escape, and Scotland to me is perfect for that.

Also, I wanted to feel away from it all, no mobile, no shops, just us, some books, great food and lots of nookie! I crave sky, and fresh air and a biting breeze. I hate sand and he burns in the sun so a traditional 2 weeks on a beach would be horrible for us and airports make us both stressed and vile.

I'm as excited about my surprise honeymoon as I am about the wedding, and I'm almost certain a Whisky tour will be involved!

    Ali x

We live abroad but go up to Scotland regularly to visit my family there and have decided to get married there. We always go to the same area so for our honeymoon we have decided to go to the Isle of Skye, just to get away frrom it all and chill out for a bit. We're both looking forward to being in the middle of nowhere and just going out walking and looking at the scenery. TBH I can't think of anything worse than having to travel a long distance after the stress of the wedding. I much prefer to go somewhere closer to home and relax - just my opinion though ?

I'm really looking forward to it - parts of it look so wild.

Any recommendations of places to visit, Chickaroonee?

So many recommendations! Where are you staying, do you have accomodation booked? And how long are you going for?

The scenery is stunning and there are amazing walks everywhere, try www.skyewalk.co.uk for recs. There is so much to see and do, and I've not done half of it, but I would def recommend a boat trip..lots to choose from the Bella Jane, the Misty Isle, seal watching trips from Dunvegan castle and also Plockton on the main line. And for a really out there place I would recommend visiting the Faerie Glen (search the website above) it's so spooky and deserted, never seen anything like it in my life!

    Sorry for hijacking the thread!

We spent a week up in the Highlands last summer, twas fabulous! We found so many things to do that we missed out on - how's about whale watching, mountain biking, whiskey distillaries, quad biking, hiking, sea fishing? There's soo much to do up there its great fun and if your not that energetic you can still go for picnics and walks along the beach, or just relax in a pub somewhere! Only thing I would suggest is that be careful where you place yourself as the area's huge and can take a while to get from a to b. Least its beautiful! Also, why not go and stay in Edinburgh for a few days at the end?

    ?
