Should we move our honeymoon?

Skeptical78, 14 January, 2013 at 08:37 Posted on Planning 0 18

Advice please!

We have booked our honeymoon (first thing we did, of course! ?) we're spending 2 weeks at this place in the Dom Rep: https://www.bahia-principe.com/en/hotels/samana/resort-cayo-levantado/

We've booked through Thompson; they called a few weeks ago asking if we wanted to move the date from the Monday to the Thursday of the week after the wedding. We are getting married on the Saturday (7th) and currently due to fly out on the 9th. Originally we wanted to go on honeymoon straight after the wedding, in the old-fashioned way- spend the wedding night in a hotel, Sunday night at a hotel at the airport then fly out on the Monday.

However, currently there is a 4 hour coach transfer from the airport to the resort. From this year, they will start to fly directly to the resort, but only on a Thursday- hence they are asking if we want to change. Part of me thinks that it would be much more practical to change the date- it would give us time to pack, sort out pets, recover from wedding hangovers (!)...but another part of me wonders what we could do with the days in between to keep the wedding 'buzz' going?

Has anyone else had a break between their wedding / honeymoon? How long? Did you find yourselves just rattling around getting bored? What do you think I should do?

We get married on 30th march and go on honeymoon on 9th April, mainly cos its Easter holidays so cheaper to wait.

Im really looking forward to the time off, OH will be around so we can have nice family time, can pack, sort out thank you cards and so on.

I guess you need to ask yourself if you/OH have enough annual leave to take the days in between or if that would mean having to go back to work for a few days.

an extra 8 hour travel time in addition to the flights is a large chunk out your holiday time.

Personally we get married on the Saturday and leave for honeymoon on the Tuesday.

if you do change flights and have the budget could you incorporate a minimoon somewhere first? Or extend your stay at your venue/hotel?

We got married on a Sunday, flew out on the following Friday. The interim time was mostly spent in a hospital, with Boy's Mum. However, apart from that, it was quite nice to be at home for some nights, have a quiet dinner or two, open gifts at leisure, let the wedding buzz sink in.

However, we still left our packing until the day before!

Reading back, this is such a 'first world problem'....!

I like the idea of a 'minimoon'! We have friends in London who we could stay with for a couple of nights; that'd be nice- then we could head to Gatwick from there.
I think we probably will move it. We've booked, like, 3 weeks off work (busiest time of year for those of us who work in education!! ? I was popular!!) so have the time. I just can't see myself planning a wedding and a holiday at the same time; think I'd have a stress embolism!!

This really isn't much time at all to wait for your honeymoon, so I would go for it. We get married at the beginning of october and most likely won't go on honeymoon until a few months later. This was because of work issues, as we are both on rotas and will probably have trouble getting the time off together straight after the wedding. Although this wasn't our initial choice, I'm looking forward to having the honeymoon a bit later, as something nice to look forward to. Hopefully it will reduce some of the post-wedding blues if we still have our honeymoon to get excited about and plan!

We get married on the Saturday and go on honeymoon the following wednesday. Due to the airline we are flying with we could fly sunday or wednesday so for us it had to be the wednesday as there is no way I would be ready to go the day after the wedding. We will get a bit of time with our boys before we leave them for a week so for us the days inbetween have worked well.

Hey!! Cool! Thanks for the advice. How was it? It's had consistently amazing reviews on Trip Advisor, which is partly why we chose it. Photos look fab too!

I got married in December and don't go on honeymoon till April.

I like the fact that we've still got something to look forward to after all the excitement of the wedding.

No probs! Thanks for being honest. I don't suppose there's much that can be done about the weather no matter where you go! We are going in hurricane season too, so we're not expecting wall to wall sunshine every day. Don't know if it's the kid in me, but the idea of being in a hurricane is quite exciting- maybe I'll end up in Oz?! Likewise, boats don't bother me either- my mum lives on the IOW and I regularly get the hovercraft across the choppy Solent to visit her- so my sea legs are in good working order! ?

The theft sounds like a bit more of an issue though. Fortunately I don't wear any jewellry and our camera is crap and ancient, plus it's all inclusive so we won't be taking much cash, so hopefully we won't be a target!

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience though. Glad they moved you to somewhere more suitable! ?

As you have time off anyway I'd be inclined to go on the Thursday but it depends how much you want the wedding buzz to still be around.

We are getting married on a Saturday and going on our honeymoon on the Sunday.

At first I thought this was great... but now I'm like hmmmm.

It did mean it was £250 cheaper and we didn't have to do any flight stop overs though, so even if we had to make the decision again we would probably make the same decision.

But I am wondering if its going to effect our first day there as we will be so tired from the wedding still !

My partner and I got engaged here in 2011 and absolutlely loved the island. It was by far the best holiday I had ever been on-we stayed in a villa as opposed to the main building and would recommend you ask for a villa as you get a bit more privacy. At the time we went the flight was direct to Samana so didn't have to do the transfer, and the transfer then was only an hour with one stop being the sister hotel. We didn't find any issues with regards to theft-I left my purse behind when we were at the pool and it had quite a bit of money (as were going to go to the beach and see the market stalls) yet one of the waiters sought me out to return it and nothing missing in. The people were so friendly there and the cocktails were amazing!

We're getting married on the sunday and flying out Wed evening to our honeymoon-mainly to give us time to chill and sort stuff out at home before flying out, so I would say change to the Thursday.

Thank you for the reassurance! ? We're all different people, so I expect that everyone's experiences are different. Hopefully our honeymoon will be more akin to the experience you had! All of the reviews (apart from the odd random 1/5...always suspicious when it's just one out of hundreds!) support what you've said about the staff and the cocktails, in particular!! What do you think the chances of being upgraded to a villa are?

From a purely mercenary point of view, we're not paying for it- so we're just grateful we're going anywhere at all- we've not been on a holiday for YEARS! ?

I think we will move it then. We've got the leave to take, so why not?
