Show me your buttonholes

Purple Pixie, 13 March, 2012 at 14:09 Posted on Planning 0 26

I've googled til my brain hurts but I still can't find pictures of buttonholes that I like. I know I might be micro-managing the flowers but I've seen so many bad ones and I really want them to be right.

I'd like mini calla lillies for the guys and probably a lily and a rose for my OH.

Has anybody got any pics they'd be willing to share?

Actually, I don't know if you've done this yet, but I realised I couldn't remember details about weddings I'd been to once I got engaged, so I went trolling through photos on facebook to see exactly what dresses, flowers, etc, my friends and family had chosen. It was a great say to get some ideas! For example, I know that I hate both my SILs wedding dresses now ?, and I'm not a fan of calla lily bouquets!

Also, it was interesting to note that I could not for the life of me remember that my brother's wife had chosen Parisian chic - not memorable. It really made me realise that some things aren't all that important.

I've googled a bit more and all the ones I've found with a lily and a rose look a bit odd. What else could be done to a lily buttonhole to make it a bit more special?

Oh god I've got no idea! I've just said to the florist - 8 button holes, white and foliage only please! I think she's using roses.

I'm hoping to make something like this, maybe with a little rose at the base:

Quite a lot of calla lily buttonholes in the buttonhole gallery of my website to give you a few ideas what can be done with them - mine are all artificial but they can be made in fresh flowers just the same but they may be a bit more expensive in fresh as callas are notorious for fluctuating in price week by week.

Ha! I've only given the same minimal direction for my bouquets Chids. Haven't stipulated any flowers at all apart from whites, creams and green foliage only. Am not really a flowers person!

To be honest, it's more the longiflorum lily than the calla which is associated with funerals but even those are popular for weddings. The calla has been the most popular wedding flower choice for the last 8 years! For me, red roses signify funeral flowers as this is the most popular flower requested for funeral tributes i.e., for love.

Thanks for explaining. Now this is a very immature reason for not choosing them... but sometimes I think their stamens(?) look a but phallus-like! And they stain, but I love their smell.

We haven't actually 100% chosen any of our flowers yet but I really like both of these ideas for button holes:

I was told this too, along with Peacock feathers being unlucky, and not mixing red and white flowers as it represents blood and bandages.

These are mine, apparently white cala lilies are a symbol of magnificent beauty and purity, holiness and faith?

I wanted yellow gerberas to match my own bouquet but OH declared he doesn't like gerberas he wants roses so thats what he's having.

My version of what it should have been on the left, and what he's getting on the right!
