Shut Thi Gob and Get Thi Coit !!!

mum-wants-a-hat, 11 February, 2013 at 12:31 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hubby and I are both Yorkies and met eachother when I started working at the pub where he was asst manager. So, after having decided to have set seating for our hog roast, I was trying to come up with novel table names. I looked at slang terms for 'married'... Some good ones there. But have plumped for Yorkshire Ales names.... Just hoping I can get all bottles with matching beermats for the tableplan. Am hoping to have: Old Legover, Old Fart, Battleaxe, Bobby Dazzler, Owd Tyke, Shut Thi Gob, Get Thi Coit and Champion. ( could also have Brewers Droop, but don't want to tempt fate for the nuptials lol!!) I'm hoping the good ole Yorkshire humour won't be misconstrued and that no offence will be taken..... Might I be pushing my luck a bit? Opinions plz ta muchly :0)

    I LOVE it!

I find cheesy lovey dovey table names quite uncomfortable at weddings and I reckon most people would appreciate the humour, and because it's relevant to you both its still special without being in-your-face-romantic!

I can read what you're writing* but then, I'm married to a Yorkshireman. I'm not sure anyone unfamiliar with the accent will get it immediately, but as long as there are a few around to explain, it will be fine.

*maybe it's a bit much for a thread title, although infinitely better than the aLtErNaTeLy capitalised horror of the shoe thread...

The vast majority of our guests are yorkshire born and bred so deciphering shouldn't be an issue.... Maybe just shouldn't put my FMIL on the Battleaxe table? ;0)

Ha! Love it! (And I speak as a Lancastrian! Albeit one who spent a decade on the 'wrong' side of the hills!!!)

I can understand it although on the other side of the m1 where I'm from we say 'tha' not 'Thi'. Well I don't, I seem to be the only sheffield person in the world with an accent worthy of Chelsea! Got me no end of funny looks at school. I blame my parents and their plummy London accents!

Anyway back on topic, I think they are funny.

Same here!!! No one has ever believed that I'm a Donny lass.... Mum and dad both speak verrry nicely, despite being from Doncaster themselves. And I have NO idea how that's happened with Dad, given the broader accents of my late grandparents! However, my OHs lot are from Conisbrough, Swinton and Mexborough so they defo have much more of a twang.... It's great!! :0)

I live between swinton and rawmarsh each seem to have their own language let alone accent or dialect! They don't actually understand me in my local shop! The poor old dear is always saying 'tha wha?!' The more she does it the posher I speak! Not being a snob at all, it's just the accent is nothing like the surrounding area.

I just read this post out to my OH as he is a born & bred Yorkshireman , unfortunately he hasn't been able to give an opinion as yet since he is still p!$$in himself laughing at me trying to say these Yorkshire phrases with my broad Scottish accent ! ?

I know what you mean flower! Born and bred in Wakey but lived in Dewsbury for 30 years. I did live in Sheffield for a year and they have different sayings to us. For example, if you asked for a salad sandwich in a teacake at the breadshop, you got it in a current teacake YUK! You had to say that you wanted it in a bap which I always thought was a Lancashire term. In Wakey there are plain teacakes and current teacakes Smiley smile

The 'shut thi gob and get thi coit' phrase made me laugh as it reminds me of 'get yer coit luv, you've pulled!!' Sorry I don't know of any Yorkshire ales though!
