Side effects when coming off the pill?

English Girl in Bangkok, 6 September, 2008 at 12:39 Posted on Planning 0 24

Hello everyone.

After 6 years I've finally come off the pill to give my body a chance to recover before we start trying for a baby ?

Has anyone else done this and what side effects should I expect? This morning I felt my emotions were all over the place and gave hubby a really hard time and cried over everything. Bet he wondered why he'd married me! ?

I came off it after about 2 years for a break. I got really heavy periods and my face went all spotty! Not a good look! On the plus side, I lost a bit of weight, I always seem a bit heavier when I'm on the pill. So I'm not coming off it again until after the honeymoon! Last thing I want to be is a spotty bride!

Never had the hormonal emotional thing though. But then I've never suffered from PMT or anything like that fortunately!

I was probably just being a moody cow this morning then and looking for something to blame it on! Think I hit a bit of a "the wedding's over" downer as I'd got a lovely card from my sister yesterday saying how special the day was and what a wondeful time she'd had, hit me that it really is over and wished I could live it all again ☹️

I stopped taking it about 6 weeks ago, wanted to wait till after wedding but I get a bit spotty at times and wanted to make sure I wasn't spotty on wedding day so the doctor prescribed antibiotics which stopped my pill working so said I may as well stop now. It took 32 days for period to come, and I had really sore boobs and felt bloated for about a week before it came. I never suffered with this before the pill or whilst I was on it (been on it 12 years). My period was actually lighter than normal. Other than this I haven't noticed any other side effects.

It is possible it could make you emotional as it has changed your hormone levels, I remember when my pill was changed I was moody, short tempered, crying all the time for no reason and feeling sick, it was a good job my h2b loved me!

I came off the pill about 2 and a half years ago and i think i just had a few more spots. This was controlled by a good routine.

How weird - I was thinking of posting something similar to this!

I was rushed into hospital on Thursday with suspected appendicitis (sp?). It turns out that I have an ovarian cyst which has probably come about as a result of coming off the pill. From what the doc said its basically my ovaries going into overdrive after me being on the pill for so long (9 years) and they are harmless. Still bloody painful though! They have given me some good drugs though and said it will sort itself out as my cycle settles down.

Apart from that I haven't had anything though! I am hoping that there aren't anymore side effects - I don't think I can take it!

Lol i was just thinking this myself...i was at doctors last week & asked her if it would take a long time for the pill to get out of my system & get pregnant because i have been on it for about 7years, she said that the opposite may happen with the pill i am on (micorgynon)...it might actually mean i get pregnant extra quick. she said that it will take longer for other methods of contraception to get out of your system, e.g. injection.i didn't know this though so thought i would share

I have heard lots of different things such as the first month you stop is your most fertile, also it takes a month for every year you have been taking it for it to get out of your system. My plan, just keep at it till it happens, plan to make a start on the honeymoon, lol

I'd better be careful this month then! I've heard several stories of friends who came off the pill and got preggers straight away. I was on microgynon as well. It took my sister a whole year to conceive after coming off her pill but think she could have been on a different one. We'll be extra careful until Christmas but still want to stay off it, although still seem to be suffering from either post wedding blues or pmt!

I came off the pill to give my body a break before I met H2B as I had been on it for 8 years. I found I got REALLY heavy painful periods - well, heavy and painful by my usual 'blink and you miss it' cycle!! I'm currently pondering when to come off the pill too...

I came off the pill 7 years ago as we were TTC. I had been on it 5/6 years after having my daughter. There were no side affects at all for me but it did take me 2 years to get PG. Although I think this may have been down to OH's lazy swimmers rather than the pill still being in my system!!

The pill has a way of putting your hormones to sleep, now that you are off the pill your hormones are obviously running wild, 6 years is a long time to be on the pill without a break just give your body time and things will settle down. (i only know as i work in womens health)

with regards to your husband, thats probably nothing compared to what you may be like when your pregnant.

good luck with trying for your baby and dont worry everything will work itself bach to normal.

    *crash*

louise - how long 'on average' does it take between coming off the pill and getting PG (bearing in mind I've been on the pill for 10 years since I was 15!!)

    *end crash*

Loobyg - I posted a similar question on BT a few months ago, I too have been on the pill a long time, 12 years. Basically it seemed everyone was different. A friend of mine gave birth last week - she had been on the pill about 13 years, it took her about 7 months to fall pregnant.

true!! Its a bit more complicated at this end tho - I work on nasty bacteria, no pregnant women allowed in my lab so I'd have to change departments etc etc...

Does that mean everyone will know you are trying? I think most people expect us to start straight away anyway and I can already imagine me getting annoyed with everyone asking if we have had any luck yet. I think Im going to tell people we are going on one last good holiday first to stop them asking!

Like I said in my previous post it took me 2 years, however my sister came off the pill and fell pregnant within a month with all of her three girls! We were both on the same brand too.

Just means that I have to tell them as soon as I fall PG - I have signed a declaration agreeing to! I asked the doc about whether it ws safe for me to work in the lab whilst trying and he said that it was fine. They'll reassign me to a different team but its still a pain if I have to abandon experiments and lose the credit for them!

Every woman is different, it all depends on your cycle etc, also depends on what kind of pill you were on, depo provera injections can take upto 18 months to get out of the bodies system however some women get pregnant straight away.

the best thing is not to stress about things, just let nature take its course.

Isn't it weird though how you are convinced that if youmiss a single pill/are sick/take antibiotics you'll get pregnant! I just can't imagine having sex once without any protection and not getting pregnant! It'll be a big shock when it finally sinks in that I can have sex unprotected and not get preggers. It's so hard at the moment because we're also trying to decide where we want to be. Bangkok has fantastc medical facilities and it would be a brilliant place to have a baby and a much pleasanter experience then staying in an NHS hospital - the hospitals here are honestly like hotels, they have a starbucks and everything ? But obviously not knowing how long it will take makes it tricky - do we apply for other jobs or just stay here?

    Sorry a bit of a ramble! ?
