Silly Question about 'I Dos'

xMissyLoux, 24 March, 2012 at 11:16 Posted on Planning 0 8

To get to the point...in a civil ceremony do you get to say 'I Do'?

I just want to clarify what I think(!) Am I right in thinking that in a church ceremony the vicar asks the question 'Do you ....... take ........ to be your lawfully wedded husband/wife?' (Or I see now the wording is sometimes 'Will you') So that the bride and groom each reply 'I Do' or 'I Will'

I really want to say 'I Do'...may be silly but that's what everyone says when it comes to weddings, saying the I Dos etc I am wanting to have I Do stickers on my shoes etc but will seem silly if we don't actually say it at our wedding!

Anyway in our civil ceremony information pack to fill in regarding vows, music, readings etc It says you can choose between 3 types of contracting words all of which are a statement to the effect of 'I ........ take you ...... to be my lawfully wedded husband/wife'

Will I be able to change it to a question, as it's the contracting wording I'm thinking maybe not ☹️

At my sister's wedding last year they didn't say proper vows the registrar just read them out and then asked "do you" or "will you" (can't remember which) and they replied with "i do/i will" so i think maybe you can ask to do it that way..... you may as well ask them, the worst that will happen is they say no.

Good luck, hope you get it the way you want ?

Speak to your registrar, most will have been asked this before and will have some kind of solution. We had a civil ceremony and used our ring exchange ceremony to shamelessly shoehorn in an 'I do' (each asked the other "Do you accept this ring as a symbol of our love and the promises made here today?").

Think I will have to contact the registrar, was just wondering if anyone else had had a 'Do you' question or had been to a wedding with one just to get a rough idea of if it may be possible and just checking it is at the point where you agree to take them as your other half.

Our vicar has actually told us we can't say I Do because it's not about what you already do in life, it's about making a new journey together, so he wants us to say I Will.

You are not allowed to change the legally binding parts of the civil ceremony wording, but there are opportunities to put it in during your personal vows, which are usually done around the exchanging of rings bit.

Ah this makes sense! I wondered why it had become 'I Will' all of a sudden when it's always been 'I Do'. Learnt something new today ?

Ah this is what I was worried about! I don't really want it in our vows. I want the registrar to ask us each the question so we can each say 'I Do'. I'm hoping we my have a nice registrar who can help us do this somewhere as know it seems to vary from county to county! I've heard our registry office has 3 registrars 2 are okay and 1 is a battleaxe lol fingers crossed for NOT the battleaxe lol
