Silly question about the use of capital letters...

Lili Donkey, 11 November, 2008 at 18:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

When writing about a sibling should brother / sister etc. have a capital letter? As in "...he grew up in London with his Sister Louise" - that makes her look like a Nun hence I'm not sure...

My mind has gone blank!

I'm a ficky too and only normally use a capital when it's a Nurse or a Nun or so on but I'm doubting myself now!

I wouldn't, no. It's not a proper noun (is that what I mean?) like Mum or Dad, is it?

No - it's a normal noun so no capital

    I'd say without the capital.

No capital unless you were addressing the person.

    So...

Today is my aunt Sally's birthday.

    "Happy birthday, Aunt Sally."

    just for you!

I'm trying to write some worksheets for my niece to help her grasp some school work, she is really struggling at school and whilst they have been fab at dealing with her learning difficulties so far, now she is gearing up for secondary school it's coming to light that they are much worse than we thought. It's also transpired that her one on one assistant has been helping her too much so I'm going to try and do some additional homework with her.

My sister is having a hard time coming to terms with it all, she seems to be taking the attitude than J has to learn these things which I understand, but I think the reality is she just can't. I did some simple percentage work with her at the weekend and it was quite upsetting - no matter how many times we went over "what's half of £1" it didn't sink in ☹️ She is far from stupid, she just can't grasp certain things and the more advanced the work they are being set gets the less and less she concentrates and understands, so I'm trying to find some fun ways of teaching things and making her really grasp some basics - I don't really know where to start though?!

I thought we could bake a cake at the weekend and that I could give her the recipe with double quantities and make her halve them - but that seems too simple? Repetition seems to work but I've no idea where to start with repetition + maths + fun?

No, unless you're writing in German.

    Which I'm guessing you're not.
