Sky multi-room

July, 24 June, 2009 at 09:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I've been advised by Sky that I need either another telephone point in the bedroom or they will run an extension from my telephone point in the living room.

Do you really need to be connected to a telephone point for multi-room. we moved the original telephone point so we didn't have wires running everywhere
and don't want to have to get another point in if its not needed. We have sky+ in the living room, does that make a difference?

I was told by the Sky engineer that you do need another line because once a month they run a rest down the phone line to check that your multi room is working. You also need it for interactive services and purchasing box office things, etc. You could have the aerial wires put around the outside of your house and just drill a small hole in the bedroom wall and get it to come in from outside through there, that's what we've got in our play room/den where the other sky box is.

Thanks Mrs D. We were thinking of doing something like that, rather than getting another point put in. ?

I think it's more to do with having you plugged into the all the interactive services to try and make money from you rather than them checking it's working. Let's face it, they don't give a shit when you ring up to report a problem so I can't see them being nice enough to check whether it's working on a regular basis ?
We've had our multi room since last October and it's never been plugged in once. To my knowledge there's been no threatening letters or anything yet. After the first year, they don't care if it's plugged in or not, they are only bothered whilst you are in contract.

Thanks CD. I would prefer to have it unplugged and we never use the interactive stuff as it is but I suppose it would need to be connected for the first 12 months, which is a bugger. I would prefer for the engineer to connect it to the main telephone point (not tacked down or anything), then I would just unplug it but I've read on DS that they start charging you the full charge for having 2 boxes, if they aren't connected to the telephone.

Word of warning, I battled with sky for over 2 years regarding multoroom being plugged into a telephone socket in the bedroom, BT came round one day during our rennovations to ckeck our telephone line as it was crackling badly, the BT engineer ripped out the telephone ext socket in the bedroom (without our permission) and we couldnt plug the second box in. I told Sky about it and they initialy said it was ok (has the multiroom for about 3 years at the time).

then they started charging me full price for the second box as it wasnt plugged in, even though I kept explaining that it was now physically impossible to plug it in. Every month I had a threatening letter and spent many hours on the phone to them. In the end I told them to cancel it and Id have just the free channels.

They continued to charge me full price for a second subscription for well over a year even though I didnt have the channels.

    So beware.

We got a wireless telephone thingy so save having to run cables up the stairs, only after numerous letters to say we would be charged the full price for the extra sky box rather than the £10/month. This is the one http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NJQHL4/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Thanks fizzy, that sounds like the best solution. Openreach charge £75.00 to put a new phone box in, so anything that comes in cheaper will be ideal. Can't see it though, will need to check it out when I get home tonight.

You might need to use this link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/RTX-WTA-111-Wireless-Phone/dp/B000NJQHL4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1245841645&sr=1-1 as the other one is through my amazon account, oops!

We have sky multiroom in 3 rooms and only one box is plugged in permanently. We had it fitted through an independant electrical company who were installing new tv's at the same time and did the extra work on the dish to have enough leads coming off.

Sky have never been in touch regarding the fact that it's not plugged in but for the initial set up I just used a retractable extension cable from one of the telephone points to the room where the sky was.

If you unplug the sky box and plug it back in it comes up with a message saying you need to be connected to a telephone to access interactive services and that's it, click back up and it's gone!
