Sleep clinic results...

I love shoes, 10 February, 2009 at 20:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Well today I got my results from my sleep assessment 2 weeks ago..

and they have completely suprised me

History

struggled for years with sleep (approx 15yrs) sometimes can get to sleep easily sometimes cant, most of the time when I do get to sleep I wake up numerous times in the night and then struggle to get back to sleep, have now got stuck in a rut with waking up at 5 and not getting back to sleep

Feel constantly tired to the point of being drained, never managed to sleep / nap during day, can go for days with a coupld of hours sleep a night, have twitchy legs during night, have tried all herbal, otc stuff nothing makes me feel drowsy, am now on long term sleeping tablets (normally 1 or 2 max a week), dont have any caffeine (gives me headaches), drink plenty of water, at the moment dont do much exercise but do have a fairly active job

Results

Well apparently I slept for 6 hours ?, there was about 90 mins of stage 4 sleep in 3 blocks (1 hour and 2 15 mins), 2 20-30 min blocks of REM and the rest was mostly stage 2, he said I seemed to be missing a block of REM which was a bit of an issue for him

No twitchy legs at all, no apnoea, no snoring (ha stick that in your pipe and smoke it Dr shoes - who always accuses me of snoring - when its actually him!!)

There were 2 periods of about 5 mins each of wakefulness, which the consultant seems to think made me think I wasnt asleep and he reckons I have what is known as sleep state misperception and is referring me on to a sleep advice clinic

He definitely thinks I have a problem (could have told him that) but it isnt as bad as I thought and it should be able to be sorted out

So fingers crossed I actually get some thing sorted and get a decent nights sleep soon!

Yay good for you. I've had some experience of insomnia but it doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as what you've been going through so good luck for the future.?

Wow that's really interesting! I've always been interested in sleep patterns. The sleep state misperception sounds intriguing, is that basically saying you're asleep but think you're awake?

By the sounds of it yes, I distinctly remember being awake and hearing others on the ward snoring and thinking I was awake and yet my brain electrodes show me not being awake.. the 2 main periods of wakefulness were about 2 hours apart and my brain seems to think I was awake for those 2 hours yet apparently I wasnt and actually had a period of REM of 30 mins in between - go figure huh!!

    My brain is foooked

That's really really interesting. I've wondered if similar happens to me as sometimes I feel I've been awake for hours yet the time (when I look at the clock) has 'jumped' a couple of hours IYSWIM - so I must have been asleep but dont feel like I have been.

It must be such a relief to have a 'diagnosis' and know that you can be helped. Insomnia sucks.

That is quite probable as that is exactly how I feel all the time, I know I sometimes clock watch, and remember certain events that happen during the night (dr s getting up for loo, cats fighting, doors slamming etc) so it was weird him telling me I was asleep...

It was a great relief in some ways but then in others it was a bit of a let down as I thought it was more serious... Just glad it is something that can be sorted

That's really quite odd and sounds rather familiar too. Just last night me and H went to bed about 10.45ish. He dropped off to sleep straight away (as he does) yet I was having trouble getting to sleep...partly cos of H's snoring. Anyway the next thing i was aware of is that it's 12.15ish and i'm nudging H over onto his side from his back (snoring is always worse on his back) and I remember saying that 'i've been in bed over an hour now and still not got any sleep so just shush will you!!". The thing is despite it feeling as though i'd not managed to get to sleep somehow the time had gone on and I suspect I must have been and was woken by the snoring!

It's all really interesting stuff and i'm very glad that they think they can help you with your sleeping problems, must be quite some relief.
