Sleight of Hand/Close-Up Magician - Derbyshire

Blonde Viki, 3 March, 2012 at 22:36 Posted on Planning 0 3

I am still considering the options for entertainment (and should probably get a move on) as I currently only have a DJ and nowt much else. I know it's not essential as people will mingle and chat, many not having seen each other for some time, but I would like there to be something 'else'.

I haven't yet fully decided what the 'else' will be, but I'm considering a magician - I know some can be a bit cheesy but I do think sleight of hand, when well done, is great - interactive and entertaining Smiley smile However, I am hesitant to go ahead with this plan without a recommendation and wonder if anyone has hired or been to a wedding with a magician in Derbyshire?

The following sites have caught my eye initially:

http://www.nickrushton.co.uk/

http://www.mattcolman.co.uk/

http://www.paulgrundle.com/

Does anyone have any knowledge about these guys?

Also, does anyone know what I should expect to pay for a magician? It appears to be a closely guarded secret on the interwebs!!

Failing this, if you all think a magician is a really bad idea, what other possibilities should I consider?! (I don't want a caricaturist, and garden games were a possibility but not so good if it rains...)

Not sure if I'll be of much help, as I don't know anything about those guys, and nothing about how much you should pay! However, I have heard of a good close up magician in Derby! His name's Anthony Chan (www.anthonychan.co.uk), he's part of the Wedding Professionals Network (their suppliers tend to be high quality), and has lots of good reviews. Not met him myself, just heard lots of good things. Might be worth contacting him ?

We're considering having an adult bouncy castle (me and OH are big kids!), and was worried about what would happen if it rained, but they have covers so that you can still use them in the rain.

Hope I've been of some help!

We are using a guy called Tom Wright. I think it was about £250 for 2.5 hours off the top of my head. Not cheap, but he is brilliant

Funny you should post this, I've not been that keen on gimmicky entertainment but have just returned from open day @venue where I was absolutley blown away by the magic this guy was doing. My jaw was fully dropped!! Yet to fully look him up but he did mention something about £550+vat for 2hrs but if we paid in cash on day then no VAT.

Thanks for the names - I'll look them up too Smiley smile

That's exactly what I was thinking Nutella, I know magician's can evoke a negative reaction as cheesy or gimmicky, but when they do their job well, some are fantastic entertainers! If I'm going to have one though, I want to be sure they fall into the fantastic category!
