slim fitting wedding dress help

swim_bride, 5 September, 2012 at 10:29 Posted on Planning 0 20

Hi,

I wondered if anyone could help with my wedding dress search. I am tall and slim but with big swimmers' shoulders so lots of the typical wedding dresses do me no favours. I figure I have a small waist and slim hips/bum, so I may as well show them off rather than hide them under layers of dress! Also hoping this will detract from the shoulders!!

I am looking for something figure hugging, and slim fitting but don't seem to be having much luck. I want something that is slim fitting all the way down the legs and not too much 'poofy' material!

The chiffon ones seem to come quite close (e.g. Maggie Sottero - Reese)

And I love San Patrick - Rumour (pic attached, I hope). My only problem is I think there's too much going on, too many ruffles at the back, otherwise I think it's just what I'm looking for.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Thanks!

How do you feel about sparkles? Anoushka G does some really lovely slim fitting dresses which look incredible on more althletic frames. http://www.anoushkag.com/docs/index.html I wish I could wear a dress like this but I'm too curvy.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't seen this designer before so will check it out.

I do prefer the more plain dresses but not against a little bit of sparkle!

Have you tried lots on already? A good bridal shop should help you work out exactly what suits you, even if they don't stock the perfect dress?

I've tried LOADS on! I've found lots that i 'like' but I sort of expected to 'love' it (especially given the price tag!).

I 'like' chiffon ones but don't feel they're particularly 'wow'. Plus I'm getting married in a big, fancy church and the chiffon ones don't feel appropriate.

The San Patrick - Rumour is the closest I've come to finding 'the one'. I'm just concerned about the back and all the ruffles.

One problem with trying them on is that i'm a size 8. All the samples are a 14 so it's really difficult to imagine what it's going to look like.

It's a lovely dress but would be cautious with wide and straighter necklines/sleeves on broader shoulders. The Audrey Hepburn neckline is not likely to be your friend. I would imagine that a V-neck would be most flattering? And very good with a sheath style.

Random dress picture but something like this (maybe less cleavage on show!):

Great dress. The back is amazing. Where is it from?

You're right about the Hepburn neckline - not my friend! Sweetheart necklines on the strapless dresses and v-necks are best for me.

FTLOMB, that dress is just beautiful. I knew I'd seen it on here somewhere before.

Swim bride, my H swims and I love the swimmer shape on a man! He didn't have to buy a wedding dress though, obviously...

I found a few slim fitting numbers on ellabridals.com website. They have a range of necklines & skirt styles too.

Hope you find your dream dress. ? I fell for the first one I tried on. Never thought I'd find one I would like as I wanted a high neckline. But tried it, fell in love with it & now waiting for it's arrival.xxxx

My H2B also swims. Big shoulders on a man = super sexy. Not so much on a woman!!

Thank you so much LLB for all the help. It's really good to know I'm not the only one in this situation. I'm going to start booking appointments and trying more on. I think I got a bit disheartened after the last bout of trying on!

Phase Eight and Anoushka G have some nice slim fitting dresses and a few of them are available in House of Fraser. Also Dessy and Impressions (american designers) are good, but not many stockists over here - I know, I am also looking for a slimmer fitting lightweight dress and everything seems to be really heavy and thick ! Good luck x

Hey, I have exact same body type as you, went wedding dress shopping on one occasion but found it hard to know what style to go for.

However, I had a personal stylist consultation today (brought as an xmas present from my OH). We spent a lot of time discussing what wedding dress would suit my broader shoulders. Basically it's all about 'softening' them using 'soft' fabrics and textured sleeves - little cap sleeves can work, or thicker lace straps (not thin straps) she recommended. Basically harsh neck lines will emphasis the angle of your shoulders.

She recommended this designer: Alice Tempererley - I had a look at her website and there is lots of sleeved dresses for slim, tall figures.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. After spending numerous hours checking out all these lovely dresses online, I decided to go back out there and start trying some on.

Just went to a bridal shop near my parents' house with no expectations and think I might have found 'the one'

It's very similar to one of the Maggie ones above. It's Blue by Enzoani, Champagne (hopefully picture will work).

I've tried on SO many lace fishtail/ mermaid gowns and never liked them on. Not sure why this one seems to work.

Now just to take the plunge and then decide on the size. I'm between sizes and not sure what to do.

When I was a bridesmaid I was in the same situation and went for the bigger size. Then I lost loads of weight and it was way too big. Even with adjustments, it was never right. There was just too much material to deal with and it didn't lie right. I'm planning on loosing a bit of weight before the wedding and so tempted to go for the smaller one. But it's a risk!
