Slow cooker recipes - tell me your favourite

Ostrich, 17 February, 2009 at 15:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Like TillyFloss, I'm struggling for time to cook these days too, since I've come back to work. I've pulled out my slow cooker and dusted it off and tonight when we get home, hopefully we'll have a lovely casserole waiting for us. I need some more ideas though, simple things that don't involve strange ingredients!

If you use a slow cooker, what's your favourite meal from it?

I love my slow cooker, it's brilliant.

I like to do things in it that I would usually do on the hob or in the oven such as chilli (currently in there at the minute!), just mince, tomatoes, chilli powder, stock, onions - might chuck in some peppers and of course kidney beans (not for the whole cooking time though).

I do lots of casserole type things, just throw a bit of everything in and see what happens! Chicken, veg, stock then make some sort of potatoes to go with separately.

Tomorrow we are having pork & pineapple curry, not made this before so GOK how it will turn out! ?

Funnily enough I'm planning to make chilli in it for tomorrow.

Would love to hear how the curry goes. Do update me. I'm not a great lover of pork, and not sure how pineapple would taste in curry, but I'm curious anyway!

I'm just bored of always using the slow cooker for casseroles. I fancy doing something a bit more exciting.

Actually, I think I might google for curry recipes in the slow cooker. That's one I hadn't even thought of.

I made a curry in the slow cooker once. It burnt. It was like charcoal when I got home from work. MrKB won't let me use it anymore, it just sits in the cupboard now ?

You can just chuck in a packet of chicken thighs (the meat doesn't go stringy like the breast meat) and then a jar of Patak's curry sauce, put on low and leave all day (I sometimes do this at 7am and am back at 6pm). Camperkid is very keen on them! There are quite a few websites you can google (there's also a curry recipe on BT Wiki). If you google slow cooker recipes or crockpot recipes, you'll get loads of American sites. On of our favourites is Hugarian Goulash.

    ETA: The recipe....

    Hungarian Goulash

    2 lb round steak; cubed

    1 cup onion; chopped

    1 garlic clove; minced

    2 tablespoon flour

    1 teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon pepper

    1 teaspoon paprika

    1 teaspoon thyme; dried

    1 bay leaf

    14½ oz tin of tomatoes

    1 cup sour cream

Put steak cubes, onions, garlic in crockpot. Stir in flour and mix to coat steak cubes. Add all remaining ingredients except sour cream. Stir well. Cover and cook on LOW 8 to 10 hours. Add sour cream 30 minutes before serving. (HIGH 4 to 5 hours) Serve over hot buttered noodles.

I don't know how to quote sorry! I've no idea how pineapple will taste either but it's worth a shot, it was a recipe that came with my slow cooker. There are lots of ideas in it but it's at home or I'd put a few on here for you.

I also do bolognese sauce in it too, I'm just trying to perfect the art of it not being too watery - I've found I don't need as much liquid as the instructions suggest.

Soup is a good one too - have done a lovely leek & potato in it, when it was done mixed some (very light flavoured) soft cheese into it and whizzed it in the blender thing, had it with crusty bread.

    Happy slow cooking!

I fry off turkey mince and then bung it in the slow cooker with the Schwartz chilli mix and some water, add a tin of tomatoes, sweetcorn and whatever else you fancy and then bobs your uncle. I know mixes are frowned on around here but sod it, it's easier for me. Oh and I use baked beans instead of kidney beans. It's too spicy for MissSun though.

Another favourite at the moment is beef casserole, just braising steak/stewing beef bunged straight in teh slow cooker with a couple of leeks, parsnip, swede and carrots and a pint or so of water. Let it cook and then when everything is soft add in a sachet of schwartz beef casserole mix ?, it's really tasty and yummy. I sometimes do this if i'm being lazy on a sunday aswell. Both things are great on a diet aswell.

Ooh Campergirl, you star. I'm going to print that out shortly and try it next week. And what an easy peasy curry idea. I'm not afraid of jars. ?

Word of warning if using chicken thighs, either cook them first with skin on and then remove skin, then put cooked chicken in slow cooker to do the curry or skin them raw (which is slightly harder to do) and put them in. Otherwise the meal is grease city.

KB3, I once did sweet and sour pork in the slow cooker using leftover pork from sunday dinner, it was black on top, I'd put it on high by mistake instead of auto shift.

Flossie Mac, to quote just click on the reply button on my post. Wait for it to fully load! Then you'll see the Quote button just at the bottom of what I've typed. Hit that, wait a minute, then type underneath it!

Soup! What a pleb I am, I hadn't even thought of it for soup. The kids are really into soup at the moment so that's a great one for me!

I'm definitely going to have to get a book of recipes or something, it seems a waste to just use it for casseroles the whole time.

Sun, I'm happy to use jars and packets for sauces. It's either that or don't cook, I don't have time to make my own.

I'm making a list of all these lovely sounding dishes so I can buy the stuff later and get crockpotting. ?

    Here's another.... lots of packets ? - a favourite of Camperkid's:

    Chicken Stroganoff

    6 boneless chicken breasts

    16 oz sour cream

1 can cream of mushroom soup

    1 pkg onion soup mix

Mix all together and put into crockpot. Cook on low for 4 -6 hours. Or until chicken is tender. Serve over cooked noodles or rice.

I have been known to even put a whole chicken in with about an inch of water and low all day - it does come out a bit ET'ish but tastes fab and you get every scrap of meat off it.
