smear tests

loubielou, 13 December, 2008 at 13:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Hello.. just after some advice really..

went for a smear couple months back turned out there were some abnormalities so i had to go for more tests and have a biopsy done. got the results yesterday and turns out i have pre-cancerous cells (CIN1 & CIN2) so have to go for a large loop excision LLETZ (something like that). Just gotta wait for my appointment to come through.

Wanted to know if anyone has had to have this done? and what it was like?

I've had dyskariosis (sp?) whick migt be the same thing. I had a colposcopy, which is taking the cells out, I think f the procedures aren't succesful you go to a cone biopsy, which is taking a cone shape out of the bottom of the cervix - either way there aren't any nerve endings, so it does not hurt. It also grows back.

Also important to remember that they are on top of this now and won't stop till they remove the precancerous cells. The only danger is when people don't go to thei smear tests or ignore follow up letters

Go and have a chat with your GP, she will be able to answer all questions and allay any fears. Good luck x

Thank you for your reply. yes it is that dyskariosis thingy. did you have to have any time off work when you had yours done?

i dont think i could ignore any letters for follow up smears, make sure they keep on top of it!!!

My 30 year old friend has never missed a smear test but her last one recently came back as CIN3. She's had all the treatment and whilst she said it wasn't enjoyable and she was in a bit of pain afterwards, they think she'll be ok. She has a squillion smear tests to have over the next 10 years, but it's looking very positive for her.

    Hope yours go well.

Difficult question re time off work as am a SAHM - think my H took a couple of hours to look after masterDD in case I felt a bit woozy, but actually I was all fine. No problems.

Now I come to think about it, I asked if I would have to have a loop incision, but they said they don't do those here anymore, so I'm guessing the procedures are similar in terms of invasiveness. I don't remember any discomfort or pain at all. I was really really surprised, as went in ready for a bit of feeling sorry for myself, but no opportunity there. I even got to see part of it on the screen. (bleee)

I think I've just come to the end of my 6 monthly smears and onto yearly now. It does all stop being a pain in the bum eventually (but no pain in the cervix ho ho)

I've had a LLETZ. The procedure itself was fine but the GA knocked me for six, and I developed a horrid throat infection afterwards. Minge-wise it was a walk in the park though ?

You had a GA? I had mine under local. It was fine, and quite fascinating to see my cervix on screen ?

I think I took the rest of the day off but other than that was fine.

The worst bit of mine was the nurse trying to have "going anywhere nice on your holiday" type chats to distract me from the minge stuff, when all I wanted to do was see what they were doing on the camera. And the medical student who couldn't look me in the eye, let alone anywhere else ?

Really though loubielou it was no hassle at all. No pain, hardly any bleeding afterwards.

Actually [tmi] The worse bit was how my cervix felt afterwards - all kind of rough and raw and meat-like <shudder> [/tmi] However it was completely back to normal within a few months.

I had one about 10 yrs ago under local. No pain and I didnt need any time off work except for the actual day of the appt. I was told to take someone with me incase I felt a bit uncomfortable afterwards - this was a good idea as although there was no pain I jumped off the chair when they had finished and then promptly fainted - oops ! So it was good to have someone there to drive me home. My own fault as they told me to get up slowly and take my time getting sorted - I didnt ! I also got to see them carry out the procedure on a monitor which was interesting but made me feel slightly nauseous as I could see what they were doing inside me but couldnt feel it.

The biggest 'hassle' was having smears every 6 months - which was also messed up by having kids inbetween so I did end up going over a year between smears due to pregnancy. However all has been fine since and I am back having smears every 3 years now I think.
