Snowy honeymoon - who has?

50's pin up bride, 28 December, 2011 at 21:59 Posted on Planning 0 10

We're getting married in July, and can't currently afford a particularly 'wow' honeymoon straight after the wedding, although we are having a couple of nights of luxury in a local spa hotel, followed by a few nights elsewhere in the UK (not booked yet - going to go for last minute deals / see what takes our fancy) and then a week off work together at home doing all the local stuff we never get to do!

However, something we have both always wanted to do is see the Northern Lights. We have also both always wanted to ski, so we thought we may be able to combine this for a late honeymoon the following Winter. I'm a teacher so restricted by holidays, and I don't think we'd go during the Christmas period as I'm guessing the prices will all go up but the following February (2013) would be possible for a week.

Somebody has suggested Finland to us as a great place to see the Northern Lights and also for beginners to learn to ski. I have been browsing the Rovaniem tourist sights and found some fabulous links - eg building our own igloo and spending a night in it, cross country skiing with stop offs for hot cocoa, reindeer or husky sleds and so on. It sounds like it could be a real trip of a lifetime, but I am only at the beginning bit of research.

Has anyone got any other suggestions? Norway, Sweden and Iceland are other options for the Northern Lights but apparently Finalnd is much cheaper (and having been to Iceland, I can well believe it!)

Sounds lovely!! I want to go to lapland for our honeymoon with the kids. Looked on internet and it looks amazing! The thought of snow, santa and log cabins sounds amazing. The kids are growing up quick as well so need to go before they are to old x

When I was researching getting married in lapland, Finland was by far the cheapest (although not actually cheap) for winter activities inc possible northern light sighting trips. I found though that it worked out cheaper to book things myself online rather than going through a travel agents, but it all looks fantastic. I'd say go for it, I'd love to do it. Just do lots of research first.

I went to iceland recently, didn't see the lights, but just gives us an excuse to go back! Food and drink was expensive like you already know, but the hotel we were in did a very good wedding/honeymoon offer which almost got us changing our minds! The honeymoon offer included lots of meal and drinks offers so possibly could be affordable if you did want to head back there.

My friend stayed in finland and absolutely loved it, he reckons whatever the occasion Finland is the answer! However he was there throughout all the winter months and never saw even a peak of the lights.

Oh that's a shame for him - which bit of Finland was he in? It surprised my that around Helsinki, they only see the lights about 20 days per year, whereas in the Lapland region (right at the top) they have lights 200 nights per year! They reckon in winter, you see them approx every 3 days. This winter and next winter are meant to also be a solar peak, so there will be more sightings all over (and much further south than normal - so keep a look out if you're in Scotland and Northern England!)

Of course, there are no gaurantees but that just would give us an excuse to go back for our 10 year anniversary, hopefully with children in tow!

Pandorasbox, did you ski at all? Maxine, I'll definitely be aiming to book everything ourselves rather than going via an estate agent. I also think we'd look for accomodation more in the middle of nowhere and keep an eye out for lights rather than paying the extortionate amounts that they seem to charge just to take you into the middle of nowhere to look for them!

My friend had part of her honeymoon skiing as she and her Hubby love it so much. Personally I cant think of anything worse than cold snow.... Bad enough going to Canada to see the inlaws once a year!

He travelled all over Finland, he was studying there from Sep-April and was gutted he never saw them! I don't know how he missed them in all those months, poor guy.

That's a lovely idea about an anniversary trip back there with kiddies Smiley smile

We went to Iceland in my Oct half term as we read that this year and 2012 are good times to see the lights... but while we were there they were apparently seen in South America! I have no idea how that happened, some weird solar reflection, but my OH saw it on the internet while we were there and nearly cried. The hotel we stayed at was in the South which is meant to be a good spot for the lights but no luck. We went ourselves looking rather than paying, like you say it is a ridiculous charge.

We didn't ski but we did go snowmobiling and it was the most fun I think I have ever had in my entire life! Iceland is so beautiful, I have always been a hot country holiday type of girl but now I think I would gladly try other scandanavian and snowy countries. If we hadn't already booked our honeymoon we would definitely be going for somewhere snowy.

It's not letting me flash here today for some reason, but for anyone interested I did a little blog post about our Iceland visit and there are some amazing pics if you like landscapes and that type of scenery:

We've booked a week in Lapland for our honeymoon this month! We're heading to Finland - Saariselka I think it is. It's quite far north so, as others have mentioned there'll be a better chance of seeing the Northern Lights. I didn't know there was some sort of solar thingy going on this winter though! Yay!

Spend an hour or so on trip advisor to compare a few places maybe?

Closer to home, it is possible to see those lights in the Uk.....In Scotland, they are known as Fir Chlis which means Nimble Man in Scots Gaelic or Merry Dancers.

Perhaps Northern Scotland along with a few drams of the local brew might be worth a thought!!!

Not a fan of Scotland I'm afraid - it's far too wet for my liking, cold and dry is absolutely fine, but damp cold gets right into my bones! I've been to Scotland a fair few times but noticed 2 key things - the Scots in the smaller, remote places (where we prefer to visit) can be quite rude (although in Glasgow were lovely) and the roads EVERYWHERE are beyond rubbish! Thanks for the suggestion though, it never hurts to think outside the box.
