So for those who had success with Alan Carrs Easyway to give up smoking...

...how far through the book did you get before you decided that you werent going to smoke anymore? My sister has just got about three quarters through and she said she does now consciously ask herself if she wants that fag, but still smokes it.

Does it take until the last page or did something click far earlier for you?

I smoked all the way through to the end - you are meant to smoke all the way through. i think the point is that reading the book breaks down the habit so that you do question why you smoke and that the decision to have the final cigarette is informed by all you have read and thought about. there's a chapter (might even be the second to last chapter) on the final cigarette and when i got to that chapter, i pretty much had to force myself to smoke it.

the first half hearted attempt at reading the book i didn't read every page or even get to the end and i'm certain that's why i didn't give up that time. i think it's the build up of the whole book, the repetition of thoughts/ideas/images he provokes that gets you to the point you don't need or want to smoke.

i'm embarassingly evangelical about it tbh. i do go on about it a leeeeetle bit much ? but as far as i can remember, your sister is probably the same stage i was at, at around the same point of reading the book. (i've not smoked for near on 4 years now and have no desire to smoke again btw.)

I must have a look out for this book for my MIL. Even after a heart attack I know she'll probably keep smoking and I'd like to get her something to help her stop (patches didn't work last time).

Not me as I've never smoked but my dad said there was a bit that got to him that was about fear, eg you buy fags before your other packet has ran out because you're frightened of being without them etc, he said he was like "right I'm not bloody frightened of anything, I'll prove it" and went and threw all his fags and smoking paraphernalia into the outside bin there and then, and never smoked again.

My friend used the book and it was near the end that she made the decision to stop smoking and hasn't since. She said that she got to a point where she thought "This is ridiculous, why am I still smoking?" and that was it!

I really do have to get a copy as I have heard nothing but positive things about it. I have known 3 people who have read it and never smoked since!

I'm going to have to bite the bullet I think...

I never actually finished it. About 3/4 of the way through I had an epiphany and realised smoking was nuts, and that I was a non smoker. And that was that. (still non smoker 7 years later - it amazes me that I ever was tbh!)

I read the book the whole way through before stopping. If I remember correctly, he tells you to keep smoking until the very end and then it mentions a section that you decide when to have your last cigarette, whether its that day or a week or so later.

I found it really easy to stop with the book. and I stopped for nearly 3 years. Unfortunately I started again - I don't even know the reason why, I think it was after a big family argument and I had been drinking and stupidly reached for a cigarette. It didn't help that MrJ was still smoking. But I am going to read the book again and make sure MrJ tries at the same time.
