So many dresses - so little time - argh!

kingfisher1923, 26 July, 2012 at 21:15 Posted on Planning 0 10

So as soon as we were engaged, I snapped up a bargain ex-sample dress that I found, as I was concerned that I wouldn’t have time to find/order one before we got married, as we were having a short engagement.

However I knew I wouldn’t be happy if I didn’t at least have a look around to see what else was out there, and to enjoy the whole experience of trying on wedding dresses…

Fatal! as of course I now can’t decide if I love my existing dress enough, or if I want to buy another one…

I don’t think I’ve found ‘the’ dress… I have managed to trawl round quite a few shops locally this week and try on quite a few, but some of the ones I loved were either just too expensive, or the shop said they wouldn’t be able to get them for me in time. But I've found some that I think I like more than the one I've already got- but I'm undecided whether I love them 'enough' more to spend the extra money.

So I feel really torn between whether to keep the one I’ve got, or buy one of the others that I’ve liked. Will I regret it if I don’t buy something that feels a bit more ‘special’… or will I regret it if I spend the extra money! I’m veering wildly between thinking, “This is mad, it’s only a dress, I can’t spend that sort of money on it,” to then thinking, “But it’s probably the only time I’ll do this, I want to feel really special!” I just can’t decide.

Plus I love so many different elements of different dresses – it’s impossible to choose just one, when they are all so beautiful! I’m torn between having a slim elegant dress… and having something with more volume. Argh!

So the pressure is on now, as it may already be too late to order some of these. I’m going back on Sat to try on the ‘shortlist’ again at two shops. Here they are:

1. Claret (Opulence by Natalie M). Love the bodice, and the pretty covered back – warm for a winter wedding! I can buy this sample from the shop so that’s OK.

2. Ellis Bridal 11257. Love the bodice again, perfect for a winter wedding. The most expensive (although still very reasonable by wedding dress standards). Not sure if these big skirts will mean that I swamp my groom though? (he’s a few inches shorter than me). This one looked fuller than this in real life.

3. Sweetheart 5792. I love how flattering the shape is, and the pretty sleeves with a bit of coverage again. Excuse the hasty scribbling.

4. ‘My’ dress which I’ve already got – a Ronald Joyce. Slim and elegant… and paid for!! The bodice is more sparkly in real life.

Thanks for having a look – any advice or expressions of empathy welcome! I just needed to offload my feelings of argh-ness!

Your dress is lovely but I also think you look stunning in dress 3, tough choice!

I really feel for you as I went through exactly the same as you. With about 6 months until the wedding I bough a reasonably priced second hand designer dress but instantly regretted it. I wanted the feelings you describe - to feel amazing in something new and special which was what I'd chosen, rather than what was available. My sister convinced me to look in a few shops to reassure myself that I had made the right decision on the first dress but like you it had disasterous consequences! In the end I went for the new dress, dispite the extra money etc and I don't regret it one bit. I liked the first dress but it was someone else's...

The dresses you've added below are all very different. The first is by far my favourite. Smiley smile

I think you look stunning in dress 3. BUT from the photo of your dress, it doesn't look like it fits you as well, it looks a bit big around the waist....I think with a few alterations it could look just as lovely

I like the dress you have just now, it's simple, elegant and has a beautiful train. Only thing to me is that it looks ill fitting around the chest, it needs brought in I think.

If you are going for a new one, I'd say the sweetheart one. But a wise friend stopped me in my tracks the other day by reminding me "its only one short day then its all over", so really you have to think if its worth justifying the extra cost.

Best of luck with your decision! x

I love dress 1, but like others have said - yours looks like it needs a bit of taking in and that could make all the difference!

I can totally sympathise with you! I bought my dress a little hastily because of time constraints on a visit back to the UK, and have spent the last few months worrying if I rushed into it and if it's the right one, but I'm hung when I actually get to try it on again it will feel right.

As for your situation, I think when the dress you already have fits you properly it will look stunning. But if you really want the experience of a new dress I love the first one. But if I were in your position I would keep the current dress and use the money saved somewhere else I the day for another treat...you could get some special jewellery or shoes (my weakness), or treat all your guests to an extra drink to help them really enjoy your day.....it depends what is most important to you. You have a figure that will look lovely in any dress, so I think you should spend it elsewhere! HTH x

Thanks so much for your comments and fellow feeling ? As you say, the dress I already have will look better once it's been taken in and up. Decision day tomorrow!

PS my photos seem to have disappeared... no idea why!
