So what's the deal with wedding umbrellas?

DrunchPunk, 30 January, 2010 at 15:44 Posted on Planning 0 16

Hello, so yes, I've not set a date or found a venue (not for want of trying!) but I have of course been looking on tinternet for wedding stuff!

I've found some wedding umbrellas that I like the look of (I'm going for a sort of victorian gothic theme) but I don't know how many to buy! Do you just cater for yourself and OH, or do you buy loads for the whole wedding party?

I'm looking to get married in November, so I'm mindful of the weather, and also of group photos..

What are other people doing?

Alice

I cant help you but I am also with you on this dilemma. I am getting married in January next year and I was also thinking of whether I should buy umbrellas. The way I kind of see it though is that if its raining I am not going outside...

Im not sure what you would need them for..?

I guess it depends how uniformed you will want your photos to look if it is raining? Im getting married in July but Im still getting an umbrella just in case but only one for me and OH as hopefully it shouldnt be raining (touching wood as Im saying this!!!) when you do decide on a venue ask if they have an umbrella to use? most do I think.

    Hope that has helped abit!!

We have two with our car, to ensure no-one get's wet whilst arriving or departing.

One feature of the umbrellas that you might want to consider is the wind factor.

Our umbrellas have wind vents at the top so any strong gusts vent through rather than blow them away or inside-out.

This could be a very handy feature of any umbrella if you're trying to pose for outdoor photographs.

Hi Laura, yeah, I very much plan on being indoors, not least because it'll be cold! It's only really the photos I was thinking of, both group ones and me n OH outdoors..

Hmm, maybe I should just buy one (making sure it has vents - thanks Phil!) in case of weather related emergencies..

    Thanks!

    Hiya

It's worth checking with your photographer, as it's likely they will have umbrellas in case of bad weather

As others have mentioned, it is worth checking with your photographer and car company as both often have white/cream umbrellas that you can use.

I bought a gorgeous lace umbrella from Pure Treats as I planned to use it for fun pics even if it wasn't raining but in the end we ran out of time for more photographs. I'm sure photographers and car companies are ready for rain but I didn't want a normal white umbrella.

I was about to get worried until that last comment.

Ours are not white,, in fact quite the opposite.

One is supplied with the car and is an Aston Martin Umbrella, quite technical as it takes batteries.

The second is I think a "Windbrella", as mentioned above quite large but never has a problem even in very strong winds.

These have never actually been used for Photographs, but are much appreciated by those whom shelter beneath them on cold blustery days.

I might now source a white one, just in case Smiley winking

    Hi,

I'm a wedding photographer and you'll find that the more established wedding photographers will have umbrellas for the bride and groom.

We have black, white, ivory and red umbrellas to use both as props and for wet weather use, all without any advertising on them.

We also have pink wellies for the bride. We do provide more of a quirky wedding photography service than your average shooter though.

Car hire companies will also invariably have umbrellas but they may have the company logo printed on them.

Another option, albeit much more expensive, try looking at https://www.james-smith.co.uk/productitems.cfm?SectionID=29

They show only one item, although when I was in there last year they did have a range of 3-4 wedding umbrellas/parasols.

All hand made work and a truly old fashioned shop.....
