Some Harry Potter questions

Flowery the Grouch, 4 August, 2009 at 18:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I know there are some HP geeks enthusiasts around ? so, following the last film I went back and reread OotP, HBP and DH, and now have a few questions.

If Harry saw his parents being killed, why couldn't he see thestrals before the start of OotP? And how did he get back to the train after the end of term in Goblet of Fire? Did they not go on thestral drawn carriages then?

And where do you think they will break DH to end the first film? Enough people complained that the latest film felt like it was just setting up for the end - surely DH pt1 will be even worse? I don't see how they can get a "complete" film (ie beginning, middle, end) out of it.

I think when Ron comes back and they get the sword. Seems like a fairly sensible place- ends on climactic point, sets up what they will do with it for last film.

I think they may struggle with the last film(s). so much stuff has been missed out/ skimmed over, will be interesting to see how they 'do' the story.

Harry couldn't see the thestrals before because you have to (in the works of JKR herself) let the death "sink in". He could never accept what happened to his mother. He had all summer to dwell on what happened to Cedric Diggory (he was in shock at the end of term and didn't see the thestrals. they did go back to the train on carriages) and therefore had accepted his death before coming back to school and could then see thestrals.

Not sure as to when they will split the film. The point where Harry, Ron and Hermione are reunited in teh forest?

I agree that the Thestral thing was probably originally an oversight, it's not the only one, there are a few, bound to be really with all those plots, sub-plots and characters.

As for when they'll spilt the next film, the general concensus amongst my friends was that it'd be when they go to or leave Malfoy Manor, but agree that it would make sense to end with them reunited in the forest.

Hmm, death sinking in sounds like a bit of a cop out, but if that's how her rowlingness explains it ...?

I was wondering if they might pad out a bit of the next two films with some of the stuff they missed - like a lot of Tom Riddle's past. Having just read the book I don't see how it can make two films really. I also wonder if they might not pad it out with more of the stuff the DA get up to at school without Harry, Ron and Hermione.

I wondered about them padding it with things they've mised as well. Harry etc also need to try and figure out what exactly the Horcruxes might be. At the moment he could be looking for anything, he doesn't know (except for the tiny hint in Tom Riddle's orphanage) that Voldemort liked to take trophies from those he had defeated and important people.

We saw #6 last night and I realised that they couldn't do #7 in one film without missing out soooo much of the detail. Not sure how they'll split it but I hope they do the book justice.

    I'm not much help, am I? ?

Eta There'll be alot missing from #7. Nothing at the Burrow, obv. Will Bill, Fleur and Dobby be in it at all?

Although the Burrow was burning - they didn't show it burnt to the ground. I wondered why they didn't do some sort of magic to put the fire out!!!

They can't miss out the Bill, Fleur and Dobby stuff from DH. That is crucial.

    Oh don't encourage me! ?

see, I don't think bill and fleur are actually all that important. I think they could be easily "combined" with other characters, which happens a lot in film adaptions, and isn't always a bad thing. Is it definitely their wedding? or lupin's/tonk's? (I'm not saying I don't want them in the film, but i could understand if they weren't).

That is what I am doing at the moment - after seeing the latest film.

I am on the Order of the Phoenix and it occurred to me last night about the thestrals. I came to the conclusion that with Cedric he understood death, whereas as a 1y old he didn't.

I must really do a full re-read too.

Shell Cottage has been confirmed - the shots they released of filming the movie were all set on the beach and around Shell Cottage

I'm looking forward to seeing the films like you wouldn't believe!!
