Some make up questions...

Flickerty, 29 March, 2012 at 21:20 Posted on Planning 0 12

Since deciding to do my own wedding make up, I've been doing some research and tried a fair few products (loving all the foundation samples, they last ages!) and I've decided on... Smashbox primer, Urban Decay eyeshadow, Bobby Brown blush, eyeliner and lipstick and Dior mascara. Still trying to decide foundation... probably Dior or Chanel. I don't suppose I'll save all that much money by not getting a pro but I've really enjoyed trying stuff out and being all girlie, and at least I get to keep it after!

Anyway, I still need to get powder and bronzer, both of which I don't usually use so wondering whether anyone has any recommendations? If I can save a bit of cash on them, great, but if it's a case of getting what you pay for then I'll splash out a bit. Is there anything I have missed out? We're getting married in Greece so it should be fairly hot - I was wondering whether to get some sort of fixing spray so any recommendations on that would be useful too.

I read somewhere today that Chanel foundation is supposed to reflect the light the best in photos.

I´m getting married in Italy and one MUA I have been in touch with suggests mineral makeup (eg Bare Minerals) for staying power in the sun. Guess it depends on your skin type though.

I´m not too sure about fixing sprays but a good primer like Laura Mercier should do the trick.

My cousin is a make up artist and she uses hairspray to fix it all in place! Was confused when she started spraying me but apparently its what they're told to use... I love Benefit bronzer, is a nice colour - not at all orangey and it doesn't shimmer which I think is better for daytime makeup.

I would NEVER use hairspray on someone's face to set makeup and I don't know any other artists that would - completely ridiculous as it's basically a glue for the hair - what would it do if it came into contact with your eyes, lashes or brows? I would highly recommend you use a setting spray - I swear by makeup forever mist and fix (www.gurumakeupemporium.co.uk). Amazing stuff that completely sets your makeup but makes it sweatproof and heatproof too. Juliet x

Thanks for the advice. I've not tried mineral make up yet so might check Bare Minerals out before I decide on a foundation. I've heard that certain foundations can be better without a primer - it's all so confusing!

Juliet - the fixing spray sounds great. Do you just use it at the end when everything's finished?

Any more powder or brozer recommendations at all?

I used a translucent powder as I read somewhere it was better to use that. I went for the Laura Mercier one that was really good and I didnt need to use my blotting pads on the day - my face kept the matt look and didnt go greasy (it normally does!).

Bronzer - I used a Bobby Brown one which was really good.

I would spritz the mist and fix onto your foundation when you've first applied it, then powder your face and then spritz again when your makeup is finished to further fix and take away the look of any powder. Juliet x

Thanks for the advice everyone, it's really appreciated. I've heard that some foundations sit better without a primer... is that the case with Chanel Perfection Luminere and the Dior Forever ones? I presume you're still meant to use a normal moisturiser beforehand?

Also, I noticed that the Laura Mercier powder has light reflecting properties in it... is this a no no for photography or will it be ok?

I'm just a never ending question monster on this subject, sorry!

I use Chanel and Dior foundations onto moisturiser skin and only prime oily skins with either oc8 or mac prep and prime spf50. I use Laura mercier brightening powder on every face I work on and it's beautiful on camera. Juliet x

Do you mean the secret brightening powder for under the eyes or a different one?

Ah ok, I actually had my eye on that as I have really bad dark circles. Can that be used all over the face then? Sorry... I'll stop harrassing you soon!

Ah! This thread is perfect! I haven't got a clue about my make up, whether or not to go for a professional or anything! I'm very basic in my every day make up - I literally wear eye liner, mascara, eye shadow, compact powder and occasionally some lipstick! I don't even wear foundation - my cousin made me buy some not long ago, but it felt like stage make up. Granted, it wasn't a very "good" one, just a liquid Collection 2000 one I found. But still, I didn't like the way it felt. My cousin suggested the Dream Matt air mousse, or whatever it's called, the new one that's like a foam? And that seemed pretty good, but expensive.

Also, does a professional bring their own make up or just use yours and apply it professionally?

*is a complete make up dummy, which is embarassing at 24*

That's ok! No I would just keep it to under the eyes. If you've got bad darkness I would use a Bobbi brown colour corrector with a Bobbi Brown creamy concealer on the top set Witt brightening powder - works wonders!
