Some people are VERY random

Clairy, 17 December, 2008 at 10:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

So we run competitions on our website and get hundreds of entries, mainly because they get posted on moneysavingexpert and some other competition websites. However, it makes me smile at what lengths some people are prepared to go. It says, in very tiny letters, that we can accept entries by post and from time to time people send post AND email entries, because they obviously think they'll be in with a better chance. I've had all sorts, from coloured envelopes to personalised messages about how they'd use the prize and how it would improve their life ?

Today I have received possibly the weirdest - half a frozen burger box, flattened out to about A4 size, and trimmed with pinking shears. WTF? ?

Agreed - i used to run a lot of competitions for clients - the agency i worked with had its own handling house and there are some very, very odd people out there

it was amusing the lengths people went to for some outstandingly crap prizes ?

That certainly is VERY random ?

At my previous PR agency, we used to handle the Sylvanian Families account, and ran lots of competitions for them which we handled through the office. We'd get literally thousands of entries every time, most of them being postal. I used to love looking through the entries as the kids really put a lot of time, thought (and often glitter ? into their entries.

My favourite one had to be from a child who had simply written on the back of the envelope, in giant capitals and underlined manyfold, 'I AM DESPERATE TO WIN'. ? Bless. They didn't.

OMG I reeeally wanted a sylvanian family thing when I was little but my parents could never afford it. I entered a competition in Twinkle (mag I think) and was quite shocked when I saw it wasn't my name under "winner" the next week. I think I cried quite a lot and everything. I don't recall doing anything special with the entry, do you think that was my downfall? ?

Jaz, I had the same experience with Jim'll Fix It. My letters became increasingly pleading as the weeks went on. I wanted a) to learn how to ice skate with Torvil and Dean (I should have made that into a TV show, I'd have been loaded ?) or b) go to the factory to see 'Baby Alive' being made, with the cunning secret hope that they'd probably give me one ?

Years later I discovered my mother never wasted her money on the stamps. Bitch ?

    I know. I'm a biatch ?

Jaz, generally we just employed the random 'stick your hand in a pile of entries and pull a few out', but if too many of the entries fell into the same catchment area, we'd chuck them back so the people in Scotland / South West / wherever didn't get all whingy about never winning ?

It's not just competitions! Some people do this wither their CV. I had a girl who sent me a lottery ticket through the post with her CV with a letter saying that she hoped I was lucky enough to win the lottery and that she would be lucky enough to "win" an interview!

By not doing anything special, do you mean you just wrote "I AM DESPERATE TO WIN"? ?

    ?

When my friend was recruiting, one day a young man came in and handed in his CV. It wasn't until later that my friend noticed there was a packet in the envelope that obviously contained some kind of granules. It was right after the anthrax terrorism scare so my mate was a bit paranoid and called the police for advice - they sent round a bunch of guys in space suits to collect item, lots of blue flashing lights, the works.

Sachet of coffee for mate to "drink while reading CV."

    ???

Oh God, you may as well staple £50 to your CV ?

I also hate CVs with photos on. I know they're supposed to be cool etc, but I think they look a bit vain (unless you're a model or something relevant)
