something old, new, borrow, blue.. are you doing it??

excitedbee, 5 February, 2011 at 20:20 Posted on Planning 0 25

Hello,

Just wondering if you are all doing the something old, new, borrowed, blue thing? Not sure if i will, is it bad luck if you don't?? Currently I don't have anything old or borrowed. Also does it have to be within your outfit or do my borrowed bay trees count?? lol.

Thanks

Well, I'll have lots of new things (dress/shoes/jewellery etc) and blue flowers, but not yet thought of something old or borrowed....

Don't think I will be doing it religiously but would be nice to do.

Yep, I'm doing it. I have an old pendant which has photos of me and my daughter as babies in it (which I'll just have in my bag), my 'new' is my dress, my jewellery, my shoes......., my borrowed is my veil, and I have a blue garter and a blue charm which Lynsey made for me.

I don't think it's bad luck not to do it, I just like the idea of that tradition. And I don't think you have to wear it either.......

I'm probably not. Although I'm not superstitious, I do think this is quite a nice wedding tradition and would like to do it, but frankly I'd struggle on anything other than the "something new" aspect.

My colour scheme is blue, so hopefully I'll have blue shoes/bouqet.....and my Mum's mentioned a pearl necklace belonging to my late Grandma which can be old, and borrowed if necessary! New will most likely be the dress...

I'm doing it because I think it's a nice tradition! I think you can interpret it however you want, so if you don't want to wear all the pieces then that's fine. A friend of mine getting married in August is having her BMs as her something blue! Mine are:

Old: Necklace given to me as a Batmitzvah gift (I interpreted this as something old to me)
    New: My dress
Borrowed: Some earrings my nana is lending me
Blue: A sapphire charm which will be on my bracelet

Am hoping to do it all, but still stuck...

New - My dress - well my complete outfit really!

Borrowed - at the moment, hopefully my BM veil she wore for her wedding (although this depends on a) if it will go with my dress and b) if we can get it fixed!

Old - No idea - really stuck with this one!

Blue - I DO stickers for the bottom of my shoes!

I will be, we are having quite a traditional wedding anyway (I like a bit of tradition).

Old - a lovely sparkly brooch which was part of my bridesmaid dress at my best friends wedding 5 years ago. Planning to have this on the ribbon wrapped around the stems of my bouquet (my best friend has a lovely marriage and will be my MOH)

New - take your pic - lots of new things

Borrowed - no idea on this one yet but I am sure I will come up with something

Blue - My MIL makes lace and is making me a lace edged hankerchief which will have our names and wedding date embroidered on it in a lovely blue thread. I liked the idea of creating a family heirloom of the future and hope this is something that could be handed down to future daughters as their old and blue and they could embroider their names and wedding dates onto it.

    I am.

Something old - the earrings I'll be wearing.

Something new - the dress, etc

Something borrowed: my tiara - my MOH wore it for her wedding in 2009 and is gorgeous! (also goes with the superstition that it brings good luck if your something borrowed comes from a happily married woman).

Something blue - ribbon on my garter

And a new silver sixpence in my shoe - hopefully the Hitched sixpence shows up again???

I seem to have everything sort of covered although not intentionally!

Old - Photo of my Nan & Grandad in a charm in my bouquet (I also have a set of my nans pearls but they are a different colour to my earrings so don't think they will go...)

New - Dress (amongst a few other things!)

    Borrowed - Sixpence!

Blue - Shoes, Ribbon on Bouquet...

Sixpence - Borrowed from a friend

I do Something Blue charms that can be attached to bouquets, through corset laces or sewn into the dress underneath, hoop etc.

    Old - my MIL2B's ring

    new - my dress

    borrowed - my veil

blue - the sapphires in my earrings

Don't bother collecting up stuff like this too early on though because people tend to give you things in the months leading up to your wedding day.

Having seen what some of you are doing I would like to incorporate my recently passed MIL2B's wedding ring some how, as a tribute to her, and would also fill my old and borrowed gaps. I dont want to wear it on my hand but i'm worried if I sew it in to the hem of my dress it might get lost. Any suggestions of how to incorporate it safely??

    Thanks

Tie it securely to the ribbon on your bouquet, then get someone to take it out later and put it away for safekeeping!

Could you attach it to your bouquet by tying it on with ribbon, or could you thread it onto a braclett or necklace?

    I am having - new - dress

old - shoes, but also my wedding ring is old as it was OH's great grandmother's

Borrowed - prob borrowing tiara from friend and her veil, though currently planning to make my own, time allowing

blue - beading on my dress and bouquet.

I have a sixpence that was given to me when I was born so i will use that.

I'm doing it, my something old and something borrowed will be my necklace and bracelet - its my Gran's. She wore them on her wedding day.

My something blue will be my garter when I finally get one.

My something new will be my dress ?
