Something old, something borrowed etc....

Ohwhatatuesday, 5 December, 2013 at 22:02 Posted on Planning 0 41

Are you/did you do something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue on your wedding day?

I've just been having a conversation with my OH about wedding things and said 'oh that could be my something old' and he laughed at me and said surely nobody does that any more. I thought most people did it and have definitely seen people talk about something blues on here so just wondered how common it was? Are you going to or did you or am I wrong thinking most people still did it?

I'm trying to find my borrowed and blue at the moment. Will probably end up with a garter or something similar as my blue but no idea what to borrow!

    Hello,

I'm planning on doing it. Smiley smile I'm having my dress as something new, I've got blue writing on my garter, thinking of having my tiny 1st ever bracelet (somewhere) not sure about the borrowed through?

Are you going to have a sliver sixpence in your shoe?

Yes this is what I was thinking! Thought it would be simple but it's the something borrowed I'll struggle with. I might just borrow a hair grip from someone ?

I'm glad you're so far all proving me right that people still try to do this! he looked at me like I was crazy!

This is really stunning! The skirt of my dress is a bit tight so I'm worried a garter would show up so I was going to wait until my dress is in to get a better idea but I like the idea of having a garter

Off course I bought it from the love story. Let me know if you have any problems finding them so I can send you a link.

I'm doing it as I think it's a lovely tradition! Still need to sort out the old and borrowed yet. I'm also going to have a silver sixpence in my shoe.

    I also did the tradition:

    something new : dress

    something blue : garter

:old/borrowed: a crystal necklace that belonged to my gran and I had it done into a new necklace /earrings and bracelet set.

    I'm doing it.

    OLD: don't know yet

    NEW: Everything!

    BORROWED: silver sixpence from FMIL

BLUE: I have a bit of blue on my garter. Again not sure if I can wear it as my dress is fairly slim so may need a back up plan for that one

Wow Pink butterfly, LOVE these garters!

I will be doing it, my old is my great great grandmothers pearl necklace, borrowed is my aunty's veil, new will be dress / shoes / everything else, and blue will be a garter borrowed from my mum, though not as glamorous as the above!

I'll be doing it. I reckon most people probably do given how many people have offered me items to borrow. I have sapphires in my engagement ring so that's my something blue. Plenty of new - dress mainly. I think I'll be borrowing my mum's pearl necklace but old is what I'm actually struggling with. I don't have pierced ears so earrings won't work. Need to keep racking my brains.

Old: My mum cut some of the underskirt from her wedding dress and i will sew it to mine.

    New: My dress

Blue: "I Do" crystals on the bottom of my shoes as my dress is too tight for a garter

Borrowed: My veil .. 33 years old

Can anyone explain why most garters come in sets of two?Are you supposed to wear both?

I'm in love with Chez Bec garters.....

    http://www.chezbec.com/product-category/garters/

But there's none with blue. Hoping I will find undewear wih blue maybe.

I was wondering that about the garter to. I've never seen two before.

I am going to have a broach on my bouquet which was my nans (old) now belongs to my aunty (borrowed) and has blue stones in it.

I am the second grand child to get married and the second to have it at their wedding so it's turning into a bit of a family tradition Smiley smile

My mum has given me her old garter but I don't really like it :s There is also something I find a bit weird about wearing my mums garter. I don't want to hurt her feelings though.

Ooo that Blush Pearl wedding garter is beautiful!

    Hi there!

I'm back after getting married and having the most amazing day ever - have been manic at work but will get around to writing a quick report and posting some pics next week.

    Old - I wore a 1950's original pearl bracelet

New - pretty much everything else

Borrowed - I attached a brooch that I borrowed off my MOH to the back of my bouquet

Blue - I painted my toenails (a garter will probably be too bulky yo wear under the Emma dress if I'm honest as it's quite clingy)

I hope that this helps and happy planning!

    xx

Something new - my dress I guess

Something borrowed - again no idea

Something blue - I hope my engagement ring will be topaz ( If he ever actually proposes!)

It's an American tradition. The bride wears the nice one and after the ceremony tosses the plainer one to the guests (as we might toss a bouquet). Sometimes if a man catches it he's supposed to propose to his girlfriend. And no doubt other such superstitions.

SO… definitely not required to have two garters!

Old = my shoes, which my MoH bought for me earlier this year when I was her MoH

New = Um, loads? My dress, my veil...etc

Borrowed = my furry shrug which I'm borrowing from a friend

Blue = think my MoH is lending me a blue garter (so also borrowed!)

I'm going to try and do it and i've got my borrowed sorted thank to my generous bridesmaid who's going to let me borrow her veil. nice story attached as her mum melted her veil on the morning of her wedding (note to future brides/MOB's etc - DONT IRON A VEIL!!!) and my mum ended up doing an emergency run into the nearest big city to buy a new one. My mum was the first person they called and she didnt hesitate to drop everything and go on a mission and think it shows just how close our familes are - hence her being my bridesmaid along with my sister (who was her bridesmaid and viceversa!)

Think my MIL has got a sixpence for my shoe but i'm not very sure why - does anyone know if that counts as the 'old' maybe?

    I am doing it.

Old - ER it's a vintage one no idea how old. Plus I've had my earrings for ages.

    New - dress.

Borrowed - a bangle from my Mum. I have a silver one I wear eveyday and she has a gold one so we will swap for the day.

Blue - my underwear has blue bows on it. I also have a ring with Sapphires so I'll wear that too.

For those that are stuck for what to have for certain parts, the origins are (not sure if itll help you pick somethig) ?

    Something Old:
Represents the link with the bride's family and the past. A common solution many bride's choose is to wear a piece of family jewellery or their mother's or grandmother's wedding dress.

    Something New:
Represents good fortune and success in the bride's new life. The wedding dress is often chosen as the new item.

    Something Borrowed:
To remind the bride that friends and family will be there for her when help is needed. The borrowed object might be something such as a lace handkerchief or an item of jewellery.

    Something Blue:
Symbolises faithfulness and loyalty and dates back to biblical times when blue represented purity. Frequently the bride's garter is the blue item.

A Silver Sixpence in her Shoe is to wish the bride wealth, both financial and happiness.

So I can go and tell OH I was right! Yay. I have a blue brooch in my brooch bouquet for something blue, my FMIL has given me a brooch to add which can also be my something old (that's how this conversation started!) and new will be dress/shoes etc etc. Just borrowed I'll struggle with...I'm thinking a hairgrip!
