Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

ExpensiveIvoryBridesmaid798, 15 March, 2018 at 19:24 Posted on Planning 0 1

Hello there,

I am having a few problems trying to find something borrowed and something old for the wedding. My something blue will be my shoes and I have too many something news haha.

I am sure this question has come up numerous times but I wanted to see what advice I could get?

How about a piece of jewellery passed down the family? Even if it did not go with your dress and style, perhaps it could be added as an ornament to your bouquet, hair piece or garter (if wearing one)? This could tick the box for borrowed and old!

Are you superstitious? If not you don’t really need to follow the tradition.

The full rhyme also calls for a “sixpence in your shoe” which seems to have been lost over the years, probably because they are difficult to get hold of, so if one item is already missing the tradition/superstition is already broken.

But, most Brides who do follow the rhyme but don’t want something old, borrowed or blue spoiling the look of their dress, will tuck the item inside their dress or underwear. So for example a borrowed handkerchief tucked in your pants or a small pin type brooch on your bra. I borrowed the backs off my mum’s earrings ( so they were old and borrowed) to use on the new ones I wore.
