(pf), 21 July, 2009 at 19:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

My lad is 5 and had diorea yesterday and today has a temp of 39.7. he is complaining of his joints hurting too and a sore throat.

i know this could be related to other things BUT do i ring ...... someone..... or treat at home with calpol ?

who would i ring? as NHS direct are only taking urgent calls and GP is shut.

he has had calpol and nurofen so far and a cool bath but is still 39 temp

i know it may not be swine flu, but it seems the ones without swine flu have been forgotten a bit. as he has a few symptoms so cant go into GP or A&E and NHS direct wont take the call as its not very urgent. what do i do?

I'd medicate him with calpol and see if his temp comes down, if it doesn't call the out of hours GP service.

I had some symptoms on Monday and rang my local surgery in the morning. They got a nurse to call me back and we ran through the symptoms (some of your son's) over of the phone and she said it is swine flu and told me to stay at home for a week and gave me a tamiflu prescription.

I would recommend doing the same. I hope he recovers soon.

It's a tricky one, a hitcher with medical background was saying the other day that their worry is that many similarly dangerous conditions may be overlooked/misdiagnosed during this swine flu pandemic. I'm not a parent but I'd get back on the phone and say that it IS urgent, perhaps stating that you're worried it may be something else equally dangerous. Have you told them his temperature?

Phone your GP. I was diagnosed over the phone with suspected swine flu this morning. My GP said if anyone has more than 2 of the symptoms of swine flu they are prescribing Tamiflu. He explained due to the different cold and viral infections going around, the lines are too blurred not to prescribe it. If anything the Tamiflu will make him feel better faster.

Have you tried ring ing your GP? ours get directed to an out of hours service. Failing that I would call NHS Direct as that's a high temp in a child and you surely should get some medical advice?

SF worry aside, I would, under normal circumstances be wanting to someone to take a look at him with a temperature that high, particularly if the meds don't seem to be bringing it down after half an hour or so. I would at the very least be on the phone to NHS direct now, you are not timewasting, though I know how hard it is to judge it sometimes.

    Hope he feels better soon.

Sorry, my hitched is so damn slow, I missed that you had already called them back. As far as I know they will only call back if you got to the handing over your number stage. I think several people have had problems such as yours. How frustrating.

Try ringing your usual GP number and see if there is a recorded message with a further number to call for an out of hours doctor. Might be worth doing that before getting back into the queueing system on NHS Direct which will be handling many more calls than your local GP this evening.

Sorry to hear that they think it's Swine Flu, but I guess it's good to have some answers. Important tip (I've learnt the hard way) make sure he eats when he takes the Tamiflu as it can make you feel quite sick. Hope he makes a swift recovery.

Oh dear, I hope you don't get it too. Although if me and H are anything to go by it's extremely mild in adults.
