Do you usually do an order of service for a civil ceremony? Were getting married in the same place as our reception etc, not sure if we need one.

I know its probably me being a thicko ?

You don't need one but there's nothing wrong with doing one!! It's nice to do something like that for people to keep as a wee momento of the day - totally your choice though and NOT a stupid question xx

The only thing is you're not allowed to call it an "Order of Service" as apparently that is considered 'too religious' - it has to be an Order of Ceremony.

We're planning on a little booklet that contains all the plans for the day, thanks to the people we're having on the day taking part, map of the venue so people know what is happening when and where, the text of the readings, lyrics to songs etc. Probably be a cover and 2 double sided A4 folded like our invitation pack was - just reuse the same document with new inserts!

Im doing one and im having a civil ceremony and all in the same venue. I just think its a nice touch and lets your guests know the timings.

Also if your having a civil ceremony its called an Order of the day NOT Order of service (you can't have that because of the connection to church)

I really don't get all this "could be religious" stuff.

Talking to our registrars today about a song from the 70's we wanted that happened to use the word "praying" in it - apparently it's ok as in context it's a figure of speech, rather than a command or any reference to a deity.

I mentioned the song "Turn, turn, turn" by The Byrds - "oh yes, that's a well known 60's pop song, no problem with that" she said, commenting that often people have songs that don't seem very weddingy as they are ones that have a special meaning to the couple. I mentioned to her that the lyrics are actually almost word for word from Ecclesiastes 3 in the Bible... and she didn't really know what to say about that.

Not necessarily - lots of people who are religious choose not to have a church service for any number of reasons.

We're two, for a start... that's why we're having a Christian blessing service right after the marriage ceremony, as soon as the registrars have left (during the 3 minute interlude probably caused by playing the song that gave rise to the phone call in the first place) so we can be what we consider 'properly' married, rather than just 'legally' married which is what the civil ceremony gives you.

I know that many people don't see the need for a 'religious blessing' on a wedding, and that's fine - but we did, but a church wedding just wasn't practical for us.
