...speaking of jars.

HundredMonkeys, 19 August, 2013 at 19:10 Posted on Planning 0 14

Does anyone know a quick way of getting the labels of them? I've collected quite a stash over the last few months but I'm not looking forward to the day when in actually going to do something with them and need to remove the labels. I've already tried and some are really difficult to get off. Is it a case of soaking and taking a great deal of time scraping? Please tell me there is a Hitched forum remedy?

Whenever I need to get a label off something, I soak and scrape. Takes a whole but it's the most effective method I've come across!

I've decorated about 60 jars, I just soaked all mine in boiling water then used a metal scourer, some I haven't been able to shift at all though so they've gone crack in the recycling!

Lighter fluid should work a treat for the stubborn bits that don't soak & scrape off - I've used it for cleaning sticky marks off things in the past x

I've been wondering about this to.

They can really be a pain in the bum and I'm not looking forward to having to do what I imagine will feel like a million jars.

I shall try all the above, thanks!

We soaked and scrubbed off the worst of the label then used white spirit to get the last bits off.

Try furniture polish (Pledge etc), gets sticky marks off of most things.

Generally if white spirit doesn't work, meths will. So if you have both available you should be good.

I know this from my home brewing days - but beer bottles are more fun to empty than jam jars.

All of the ideas will work but I once had somthing I was doing that I needed the lables off intact, I found that if you leave them overnight in a bucket of water the next morning the lables came off without any work at all - some were even floating free in the water. Not quick but it is working while you are sleeping.

Leaving them to soak for a good few hours, maybe even overnight should help loosen if not totally remove the labels. Then for any sticky bits left over use either WD40 or baby wipes to remove the left over stubborn bits!
