Spending diaries

Redbedhead, 2 August, 2009 at 15:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

Has anyone else done one of these? The thread about how much do you spend on your food shopping got me thinking so I have had a look at the last 3 months of credit card and bank statements. I thought I spent about £300. Except having looked at it, it is actually just over £400 a month and that is before any takeaways / entertaining? £300 is about what we spend on weekly shops, but as we top up during the week a couple of times, that all adds up.

I wondered where all our cash was going and now I know!

I started one yesterday (again, after the food shopping thread). I suspect it's not going to be pretty! I know I'm fairly pleased when my Tesco shop comes in at less than £100, but it's the "extra" bits I don't think about (couple of drinks in Starbucks, extra bits from the Spar midweek, just buying things because I want them, rather than need them...).

Last October I had a worry about how much I was wasting on stuff I didn't need so I now withdraw 300 a month in cash and give myself £60 a week and if I don't have the cash I can't buy it. Seems to have worked so far.

I do that for my own spends but it wouldn't work for things like food as most of our shop is done on line. I just need to be more vigilant I think. I was menu planning well and that has fallen to the wayside in the last month so I have started that again immediately. I also need to be careful on the top up shops. I only really 'need' milk and fruit and sometimes bread but it is coming to £25 each week so I must be adding in extras that we don't really 'need'.
