spill about your proposal

cotteesgirl, 30 December, 2008 at 19:38 Posted on Planning 0 26

Ok after the non excitement of xmas (it was a pretty dull one due to lack of funds and having a boring family - harsh but true lol) - there are probably previous threads on here about this but i fancy a bit of mills & boon romance so would love to hear how he/you proposed!

Mine wasnt overly romantic but quite sweet - i was going to new york for my 35th with one of my best friends (who is a man which didnt go down well but it was booked OH came along) and h2b sent me away with a box as a present (fairly obvious what it was as he had dropped so many hints) so on my birthday i went to central park opened the card which said will you marry me and to call him with answer which was yes whilst my friend stood by not knowing what to do haha! ahhhhh what a day Smiley smile❤️

It does and the big softie in me loves it everytime!

We were snowboarding in Tignes, France in March this year, and had decided mid week to have a day off to rest. We took the fenicular railway up to the highest mountain to see the views. It was absolutely freezing up there so OH asked if I wanted my fleece as an extra layer. He bent down (sort of on one knee and after he had passed my fleece out of his bag, he said "You know I love you?" and I looked down and he was holding the ring and then asked if I would marry him.

Edited as my keyboard jumps and one of my sentences didnt make sense!

Aw, I've not heard these stories yet!

OH told me his aunt and uncle had invited us up to St Andrews (where they were staying in a hotel) for dinner with them. I moaned all morning about how it was such a long way to go just for dinner (whoops, lol). So we went up early to make a day of it, went to the aquarium, and then out for a nice lunch. Then Kenny told me we should go to the hotel so we went and I waited in the bar while he 'phoned his uncle to check where he was', he was actually checking us in! Kenny came back and said we were just to go up to their room for drinks before dinner, so up we went.

We arrived at the room and knocked a few times- no answer, then he whips out the key card, at which point I was thinking 'what is going on, why has he the key to their room?' So we went in and there were flowers, champagne, chocolates, music playing but no aunt and uncle! ? So he asked me to sit on the bed, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! ?

    Aah, that's so sweet.

We went to Disney, Orlando in June with my parents plus my brother and his girlfriend. We'd planned to watch the fireworks in front of the castle on our last night. Half way through the display he dropped down on one knee and produced a gorgeous ring which he had bought the week before our holiday. He asked my parents permission before we even left England and my mum had looked after the ring for the whole two weeks so I didn't have a clue. My brother and his girlfriend didn't know a thing so they were as shocked as me!! I promptly said yes and celebrated. It was a wonderful end to our holiday and certainly one i won't forget.

It's great to hear romantic stories in the lull after Christmas. Did anyone get engaged on Christmas day?

Yeah, i did. Last year. Before I opened my presents. By 9.10am I am sitting in the kitchen with a bottle of beer and a fag trying to calm down and prepare myself for calling my parents with the news.

    (I've since quit smoking, lol)

I got engaged in A+E in St Georges in Tooting.....

He had planned a whole romantic meal for a week later on my birthday but I got taken ill and so he asked in hospital to cheer me up - he'd been planning to go and get the ring that day anyway

I love the New York proposal, that's so clever. Although I would have had to fly home IMMEDIATELY!!!

Short version: in late may this year, in a 5* hotel room overlooking leicester square! i promptly started laughing and crying hysterically and then jumped on the (massive) bed for ages! went for dinner at j.sheekey (prebooked by sneakily romantic h2b), sat there listening to another couple in the process of breaking up and cancelling their wedding (v.weird), home to tell my parents on sunday, and flew up to scotland (flights already prebooked by sneakily romantic h2b) to tell his family.

wouldn't have changed anything for the world ❤️

OOh that is so lovely what a great way to propose, I am so glad we get to share our romantic stories, but thats me a slushy gal!

We were on holiday in Malta, and my boyfriend had been totally unromantic the whole holiday and I was so annoyed at him, we had a day trip to Sicily from Valetta and part of the day was a trip up Mount Etna, as we came back down in the cable car he started the whole speech about as being together for 5 years and told me spoke to my dad, I remember being very ungracious, just yelping a lot saying "oh my go, oh my god". It was perfect and beautiful xx

We were on holiday inthe caribbean and I have to admit I was expecting it to happen there. We'd got to the middle of the holiday and no proposal so I asked him to get up with me at sunrise. Anyway, we missed it one day and the next he wouldn't get up - que me going in a mood and getting back in bed - then he decided we would go and see the sunrise but I was too moodyy and promptly told him to go watch it himself, so he did! Well not really, but 5 minutes later he was back telling me about this big cruise ship in the distance that he wanted me to see. I got dressed and watch to the end of the jetty in a mood, sat on his knee on a deck chair with the sun rising and he asked whether I wanted my present now....

I just burst into tears and out came a georgous ring! I went to put it on my finger and I said "no, you have to do it properly and get down on your knee!" so he did and I said YESSSSS and cried lots more..

We got back to the room (a cottage that opened onto the beach) and kept asking me if I liked the ring as he wasn't convince I did because I hadn't cried as much as he thought I would lol (it was very different to what we had looked at but was and is stunning and I love it) because he kept asking - it made me upset that he wasn't just enjoying the moment and was worrying about the ring - first argument!

Then he was happy I liked it and we took some pics - on which you can tell I've been balling my eyes out! lol

Mine wasn't really a surprise. We went to Antwerp for the weekend and I knew it was to pick a ring. When we got there we went to a couple of jewellers and I picked the stone and setting I wanted. We picked it up a couple of hours later and then went back to the hotel. He disappeared off for a bit then came back to the room and said we had to go somewhere. One of the hotel staff took us up to the ballroom and led us to a table set up under a massive chandelier, infront of a window looking out onto the town square. There was candles and flowers and champagne set up and he asked me there. No down on one knee thing though as he knew I hated that!

H had asked me a few times when drunk and each time i said that if he remembered the conversation in the morning the answer was yes but he never mentioned it the following day. I was suspicious it was due to him being shy and not because he didn't mean it so in the end I got a friend to make a jigsaw puzzle of a photo of the two of us with 'will you marry me?' written on it. I set up a treasure hunt round the house and sent him off to find all the pieces...

    OMG that is so sweet!

My story is a bit long sorry!

In September OH and I lost our daughter (she was stillborn). Anyway, seeing as we were both off work we decided we would go on holiday for a well deserved break. We ended up doing a fly-drive in Florida, just travelling round and stopping randomly when we felt like it. We decided while we we're in Miami that we would stay in a really posh hotel and have a lovely meal etc. We ended up staying in the Trump International (v.swish) and booked to eat in their restaurant that night.

The meal was beautiful (H2B asked for candles and rose petals without me knowing). Afterwards we went back to our room, ordered a nice bottle of wine and sat out on the balcony overlooking the ocean. He went insided, then appeared saying he had to ask me somthing, he got down on one knee and said with everything we had been through he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me! It was perfect!

So I guess it was the silver lining to our v.dark cloud.

    Ah, some lovely stories ladies.

Mine was a complete surprise. I had been to hairdressers and got home to find some roses on the table with a note sending me upstairs to look on the bed, where there were some chocolates followed by another note (you get the idea) He had hidden loads of presents around the house like, diamond earrings, perfume, teddy, champagne etc and the last note led me to H2B down on one knee asking me to marry him. Was shaking like a leaf.

Apparently though, nearly scuppered the whole thing as the day before got really stroppy because he wouldn't let me use his car (mine had no petrol and he never normally minds) - he had all the stuff hidden in the boot and then on the day, after hairdressers, went to my Mums and luckily text h2b on way that I was going because he was already there asking my parents for permission. Suppose it's good to keep him on his toes.

I always love hearing how others got engaged. Keep the stories coming!

Bless, all soooooo romantic! Here's ours...

We went on holiday to Sharm-el Sheikh at Easter. My h2b took me to a restaurant with a floating platform out in/over the ocean so that you could see all the amazing fish etc while we were having dinner, oh, and it was our anniversary of being together too, and we had a really gorgeous meal and drinks and then they had this rather cheesy singer/entertainer and when he sang 'you to me are everything' I looked back round at h2b and he was grinning at me with an engagement ring on the table. Champagne arrived and thats it really - it was just perfect! Gettin married in Dec this year - 351 days to go! x

Ok mine is very fresh in my memory so be warned I may go a bit OTT with the detail/length!

It happened last night, which was also my birthday (NYE) and 5 years to the day since we got together.

We were meant to be going to a black tie do with OH's uni friends, who out of 8 I've only met 3, so wasn't too happy about spending my birthday with strangers! It was in London so we'd decided to book into a Travelodge rather than running for the train.

On the way to London we got off the train a stop to early, when I was told I'd been tricked and we were actually staying in the Hilton. Apparently my dad had let slip the night before, but it had gone over my head and I thought he was joking about the fact we were in a TL.

So we checked in and got ready to go out to the restaurant, although the restaurant was actually a boat. There were no uni friends, or any other friends for that matter, so I was right about spending my birthday with strangers!?). At this point, although suspicious I thought it was/could be just a nice birthday surprise. On the boat we had a meal, with 2 other couples on our table one close to our age and another older couple. Spent the dinner having a really bizarre conversation between the 6 of us about setting up a battery chicken farm but passing it off as free range (I thought I'd dreamed that conversation last night but apparently it really did happen!)?

Then it got to midnight, the boat had stopped outside Big Ben, in good view of the wheel and the fireworks, and I thought he might but the clock struck 12 and he didn't do it then, but 15 seconds later he pulled out a ring and said "marry me". I said yes, but then made him get down on one knee! (According to him, 00.00 would have been a bit cheesy, so he waited 15 seconds?)

I was desperate to tell people (phone lines jammed, and didn't want to spend the night on the phone) so told the couple who were on our table. We spent the next 2 hours dancing like crazy fools on the boat until it reached London Bridge. Back at the hotel, I was still desperate to tell people so kept going to the toilet to tell random strangers my news! One girl even gave me a party hat.

We also met Only Men Aloud in the bar, they'd been on the BBC boat. We chatted to some of them for ages, and I tried to get 4 or 5 of them to sing at our wedding (I said I probably wouldn't be able to afford all 20). In the bar ant also told me he'd like to get married this year, much to my shock - I'm normally the impantient one!?

It was a perfect evening. I feel so lucky and happy today. ❤️

(the only thing that slightly spoilt it was my detective skills that meant I googled the menu and found out it was a boat 3 months ago ?... but still didn't expect that, I thought it was his way softening the blow of spending the night with all his friends)

Erm, well I would describe it to you if I knew anything about rings! Apart from my watch it's the only piece of jewellary I own that wasn't bought in Clares Accessories or similar type shop.

It's silver with a diamond on top, we're going to the shop tomorrow to see if there's another I'd prefer but I'm quite attached to it now.

Oops, I stand corrected, just been told it's platinum and I've no idea if that is better or worse than silver ?

*snorts with laughter* Don't let your OH hear....platinum is A LOT more expensive than silver or gold. If all the platinum mined in the world was poured into an olympic size swimming pool it would come up to your ankles. Gold would fill the pool 4 times over....

Sounds lovely and classic anyway - and I know what you mean about claires...

LOL. Well as a guess I would say it probly cost a bit more than £50.

Its so exciting being engaged. Don't worry about it all seeming stressful etc. I was a total stresshead for about the first month and then I calmed down and started sorting stuff. As other people have said, start with the date + the venue/registrar and go from there!

Wedding dress shopping is quite fun too.....

Aahhh some lovely stories - I love a good bit of slush every now and again.

We got engaged on 2nd Jan last year at the Giants Causeway in N. Ireland. We had been to my family in UK for xmas and were over seeing his in Ireland for new year. He had asked my Dad just before we flew to Ireland and on the day it was very cold and rainy - apparently nearly didn't happen as I was moaning. I had suspected he would ask me there but we passed so many romantic spots and it didn't happen so kind of gave up on the idea. He then insisted we walk up to the top of this cliff and he asked me there. He went down on one knee after a little prompt too. It was lovely. He didn't have a ring as he wanted us to go and choose one together (good move) which we did the next day in Belfast.

    So thats me.

I'm browsing venues now, date really will depend on where's free and once we work out what holidays our nearest and dearest have booked. I think my project management training is going to come in handy over the coming months (it's just a shame I'm rubbish at it and have recently quit being a PM!)
