Sports Personality finalists announced-who gets your vote?

*ginni of the lamp*, 2 December, 2008 at 00:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 25

Rebecca Adlington

Chris Hoy

Bradley Wiggins

Rebecca Romero

Nicole Cooke

Ben Ainslie

Christine Ohuruogu

Lewis Hamilton

Joe Calzaghe

Andy Murray

I'm torn between several of the Olympians (Ainslie, Adlington (she sure has a personality!), Ohuruogu and Hoy I think).

What about you?

Lewis Hamilton gets my vote. I don't think he'll win it though, probably one of the Olympians will win.

Hoy & Ainslie should share it

He gets my vote too. I also don't think he'll win it - he probably never will.

Calzaghe. Never got the recognition he deserved as most of his fights were on Sky, yet he's probably the greatest ever boxer the UK has ever produced. Regardless of anyone's personal misgivings about boxing, it is an immense achievement to have gone undefeated in your career and faced down the highest quality opponents.

Much as I'm pleased with Lewis Hamilton's win, he's capable of going on to better things and he was so very close to choking at the end of the season (in fact he did and relied on a fair amount of luck to win the championship).

If Calzaghe doesn't get it (and he won't) then my vote would go to Chris Hoy.

BGB, Calzaghe won it last year didn't he? That's one of the reasons (plus the fact that it's an Olympic year so I feel an Olympian should win it) I'd rather Hoy or one of the others won it.

There's a lot of Olympians in there!

I'd vote for Rebecca Adlington, she's done really well (and she's a local girl)

Second choice would be Lewis Hamilton.

Good point. No reason why he can't win it twice though ?

Chris Hoy then followed by Ben Ainslie and Rebecca Adlington.

Torn between Ben Ainslie, Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington, Christine Ohuruogu and Rebecca Romero. Lewis Hamilton will win though - the 'olympian' vote will be too split as there isn't one obvious contender.

Calzaghe as first choice for me.

I'd love for Calzaghe to win it again, otherwise Chris Hoy or Rebecca Romero.

    Rebecca Adlington for me.

Why isn't that other boxer up there, umm, I am brain dead - the one who won recently in Las Vegas........ He would get my vote.

    Hamilton or Hoy.

Hamilton won't win - there'd be an outcry if an F1 driver won it in an Olympic year, particularly when we did so well.

I don't see why an Olympian has to win in an Olympic year - just because there were some Olympic games on doesn't make other sporting achievements less impressive.

    My vote is for Hamilton.

Ohuruogu for me. So much stick and so much dedication - to come back and win Olympic gold (the only track one) after everything she went through.

I think I'd like Hoy or Adlington to win it. I don't know why but I don't want Lewis Hamilton to get it.

Lewis Hamilton. I think his achievement this year has been tremendous particularly bearing in mind that most consider his car to be inferior to the Ferrari. A lot of people are talking about luck playing a part in his victory (not just picking on you, BGB!) but in actual fact taken across the whole season, him and Massa were very evenly matched and it was in the most difficult conditions (Silverstone in the rain for example) that Hamilton showed his skill. Not only that but his achievement is also a first, for someone from his background (talking socio economic not just racial) to get into F1 at all, let alone win, is groundbreaking and will hopefully pave the way for more equality in the sport.

I do agree though that it's hard to award him anything with the word 'Personality' in it ?

Chris Hoy or Rebecca Adlington for me. Lewis Hamilton is not someone I think highly of so regardless of his achievements on the race track he wouldn't get my vote.

Isn't there a young sports personality award - I think she would be a great bet for that

She's one of 3 contenders for young sports personality as it happens - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tv_and_radio/sports_personality_of_the_year/7748837.stm. I hope she wins, though I'm impressed with the junior wimbledon girl too.
